Lucky Charms Hot Cocoa Bombs Recipe

We are in full-on Hot Chocolate Bomb fever over here, with this latest creation being our seventh version!

I love how cute those crunchy little marshmallows in Lucky Charms cereal are and I was so excited when I saw that they released not only a hot chocolate with Lucky Charms marshmallows this year, but also these fluffy Jet Puffed Marshmallows in those classic shapes.

Even if you’re not a fan of the cereal, there’s no denying how cute and iconic those marshmallows are – and how magical they look in a mug of delicious white hot chocolate.

If you can’t track down those new products (I had to order online), you can still make this recipe using the marshmallows from a box of Lucky Charms cereal.

We used white hot chocolate powder and white chocolate melts to create a decadent mug of white hot chocolate that serves as the perfect backdrop to let those little magical marshmallows really pop.

These would be a cute gift for your little Leprechauns to make or enjoy on St Patrick’s Day – or even a rainy day that could use a pop of color and a warm mug of hot cocoa.

Hot Chocolate Bomb Recipe Questions

Do I have to temper my chocolate to make hot chocolate bombs? No, you technically don’t have to temper your chocolate to make hot chocolate bombs – but it will result in a better product if you do.

Tempering chocolate is super simple and can even be done in the microwave (we outline the process in the recipe below) and allows your chocolate bombs to stay at room temperature without melting or losing their shape.

What chocolate is best for hot chocolate bombs? I prefer chocolate melting wafers like these to make our hot chocolate bombs. They are easy to work with, do not require any chopping, and temper beautifully.

You want a good-quality chocolate that contains cocoa butter to allow it to temper properly. White chocolate chips do not work for this recipe because they have added ingredients that prevent them from melting.

White vanilla candy melts can be used (and don’t require tempering – just melting) but they will change the flavor of the hot chocolate bomb.

How long do hot chocolate bombs last? If you properly temper your chocolate, they can be kept in an airtight container at room temperature for over a month.

How to Make Lucky Charms Hot Chocolate Bombs

Add candy melts to a microwave-safe bowl and melt in the microwave in 30 second increments stirring in between until creamy and smooth.

Fill the molds with the melted chocolate making sure to fill the sides of the mold all the way to the top and keeping the inside hollow. Use the back of a spoon to guide the chocolate up the mold.

Place in the fridge or freezer for about 5-10 minutes or until they are easy to pop out. Very carefully remove the chocolate from the mold. If they don’t pop out easily, place back in the fridge or freezer for a few more minutes.

Scoop about 2 tbsp of cocoa powder into the bottom mold. Place 4-5 Lucky Charms large marshmallows on top of the cocoa powder.

Heat a plate in the microwave for about 45 seconds, carefully taking it out cause the plate will be hot.

Take the empty chocolate half and press the open part onto the hot plate for a few seconds to melt the chocolate and twist to smooth the edges. Connect the two half pieces of chocolates together and seal together. Allow to harden together.

Lay a piece of parchment paper down on a flat surface and place sealed cocoa bombs on top.

Add pink, green, blue and yellow candy melts to separate microwave-safe bowls and melt in the microwave in 30 second increments stirring in between until creamy and smooth.

Microwave 2 bowls at a time and have your ziplock bags ready. Once the first 2 bowls of melted chocolates are melted take out of the microwave and put the next 2 bowls in to melt. While they are melting add the melted chocolate to separate ziplock bags. Do the same for the next 2 colors.

Snip off a corner of all 4 ziplock bags. Work fast and pipe melted chocolate across the top of the cocoa bombs one color at a time. Quickly add a few Lucky Charms cereal marshmallows on top of melted chocolate before it hardens. Place in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes to allow it to harden.

To use, place in a mug and pour hot milk over top. Stir until the hot cocoa bombs are completely melted and enjoy!
