Mint Hot Chocolate Bombs Recipe

Mint chocolate is one of the few dessert flavors that both my daughter and I can agree on, so we have a ridiculous assortment of mint chocolate desserts on the blog from crockpot thin mint hot chocolate to Andes Mint cake mix cookies, even mint chocolate chip cake inspired by mint chip ice cream!

So, adding a mint chocolate hot chocolate bomb just in time for the cold weather seemed like a perfect addition to our recipe collection!

These indulgent mint chocolate bombs melt in a mug of hot milk to create a creamy, rich and luxurious mug of hot chocolate with the perfect hint of mint. The mint is well-balanced and not overwhelming, making it a refreshing cold weather treat.

There are lots of ways to impart the mint chocolate flavor in these hot chocolate bombs – depending on whatever you’d prefer:

  • use a mint chocolate hot chocolate mix
  • use mint chocolate candy melts for the spheres
  • use mint chocolate (like Andes) for the spheres
  • add some mint flavor oil to either the melted chocolate or hot chocolate mix
  • adding mint candies or marshmallows along with a standard hot chocolate mix

We opted for a mint chocolate candy melts and a standard hot chocolate mix and topped it with chopped mint chocolate KitKats.

The Mint KitKats make for a fun addition to these mint chocolate hot chocolate bombs and they are available on Amazon, however, they are definitely just an optional garnish and you can give an indication that these hot chocolate bombs are mint-flavored by using a green candy melt drizzle, green sprinkles or another favorite mint chocolate on top (like an Andes Mint).

How to Use a Hot Chocolate Bomb:

You can use your hot chocolate bomb two ways:

  • Place the hot chocolate bomb in a mug and pour warm milk overtop
  • Place the hot chocolate bomb in a mug already filled with warm milk

The warm milk will slowly melt the chocolate sphere, enhancing the chocolatey flavor of the cocoa while releasing the powdered cocoa, sprinkles and marshmallows inside of the bomb.

Tip #2: Cut the silicone molds so that each half sphere mold is separate. You may find this easier to control the molds when working with the melted chocolate, as compared to trying to do all 6 at the same time.

Kitchen Tools You May Find Helpful

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Piping Bag
  • Skillet or Plate (for melting edges of hot chocolate bombs)

How to Make Mint Chocolate Hot Chocolate Bombs

Place mint chocolate melts in a microwave safe bowl and melt in the microwave per the directions on the package. (Or, melt in a glass bowl over a boiling pot of water.)

Place 1 tbsp melted chocolate into each cavity of the half-sphere mold and, using the bottom of your tablespoon measuring spoon, press the chocolate up the sides of the mold, keeping it thick but even and ensuring that the edges are not thin. (Repeat for all 12 half-spheres.)

Reserve remaining chocolate for fixing any cracks and drizzling over the finished bombs.

Place the chocolate filled bomb molds in the freezer for 5 minutes to set.

Cut the Kit Kats in half.

Remove molds from the freezer and gently peel the silicone mold away from the chocolate half-spheres.

Fill 6 of the chocolate half-spheres with 1 Tablespoon of hot chocolate mix, a half stick of the mint KitKat (optional) and 6-8 mini marshmallows.

Boil some water and pour into a heat-proof bowl and place a heat-proof plate overtop to warm. Remove the plate once warm to the touch.

Take one of the empty chocolate half-spheres and gently place the edges against the hot plate for about 10 seconds to melt the rim of the half-sphere.

Immediately press the edges of the warmed half-sphere against the edges of one of the filled half-spheres to form a hot chocolate bomb. Repeat with remaining 5 empty half-spheres.

Remelt the remaining chocolate, then drizzle over the hot chocolate bombs using a fork or piping bag. Immediately place a half KitKat on top of the chocolate while wet (or use another mint or green sprinkles to suggest the mint chocolate flavor).

Place the hot chocolate bombs into the freezer for 5 minutes to get them to set, then remove and store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use.
