Mocha Chai Hot Chocolate Bombs (with Video)
A fun Starbucks-inspired hot chocolate bomb for grown-ups, today’s Mocha Chai Hot Chocolate Bomb melts to create a rich and warmly spiced mug of hot chocolate inspired by Starbuck’s Mocha Chai Latte. These chai hot chocolate bombs are a fun treat that are special enough for gifting but easy enough to enjoy yourself with a good book.
Chai Hot Chocolate Bomb Recipe
I’m the last to be in the know about Starbucks trends. Ever since I bought my own latte maker, I only ever have Starbucks when on vacation.
I had no idea Mocha Chai was even a thing until my friend brought me one recently. It was delicious – but of course, I had to figure out how to make it myself at home.. and then I went a step further and decided to translate the flavor into a hot chocolate bomb!
This hot chocolate bomb melts in hot milk to create a mug of warmly spiced hot chocolate with hints of cinnamon, cardamom, ginger and vanilla. It’s actually the perfect Christmas hot chocolate because it combines all of those classic Christmas spices with rich chocolate.
There’s a couple of different ways to give these hot chocolate bombs a hint of chai flavor. We used a liquid chai tea latte concentrate because it’s a bit more readily available and I wanted to see if this method would actually work – and it did! But an easier way would be to grab a powdered chai latte mix like this one (I looooove it but it’s hard to find unless you order on Amazon).
How to Use a Hot Chocolate Bomb:
You can use your hot chocolate bomb two ways:
- Place the hot chocolate bomb in a mug and pour warm milk overtop
- Place the hot chocolate bomb in a mug already filled with warm milk
The warm milk will slowly melt the chocolate sphere, enhancing the chocolatey flavor of the cocoa while releasing the powdered cocoa, sprinkles and marshmallows inside of the bomb.

How to Make Chai Hot Chocolate Bombs
Place chocolate melts in a microwave safe bowl and melt in the microwave per the directions on the package. (Or, melt in a glass bowl over a boiling pot of water.)
Place 1 tbsp melted chocolate into each cavity of the half-sphere mold and, using the bottom of your tablespoon measuring spoon, press the chocolate up the sides of the mold, keeping it thick but even and ensuring that the edges are not thin. (Repeat for all 12 half-spheres.)
Reserve remaining chocolate for fixing any cracks in the finished hot chocolate bombs.
Place the chocolate filled bomb molds in the freezer for 5 minutes to set.
Remove molds from the freezer and gently peel the silicone mold away from the chocolate half-spheres.
Fill 6 of the molds with 1 tbsp hot chocolate mix and 1 tbsp chai tea. Allow the tea to soak into the hot chocolate mix in order to help the marshmallows from melting from contact with the tea. This should take 2-3 minutes. (Alternatively, you can use powdered chai latte mix.)
Add some sprinkles and 6-8 mini marshmallows on top of the tea/cocoa mixture. We used green and white for the Starbucks theme but you can use whatever you’d like.
Boil some water and pour into a heat-proof bowl and place a heat-proof plate overtop to warm. Remove the plate once warm to the touch.
Take one of the empty chocolate half-spheres and gently place the edges against the hot plate for about 10 seconds to melt the rim of the half-sphere.
Immediately press the edges of the warmed half-sphere against the edges of one of the filled half-spheres to form a hot chocolate bomb. Repeat with remaining 5 empty half-spheres.
Place white chocolate wafers in a microwave safe bowl and melt in the microwave per the directions on the package.
Drizzle the melted white chocolate over the hot chocolate bombs using a fork or piping bag. Immediately garnish with some sprinkles over top while chocolate is still wet.
Place the hot chocolate bombs into the freezer for 5 minutes to get them to set, then remove and store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use.
