Felt Christmas Tree Craft
If you have a beginning sewer in your midst, or enjoy simple sewing projects yourself, this Felt Christmas Tree Ornament is a gorgeous Christmas sewing project for beginners (and we have a free printable sewing template to make things super easy).
Felt Christmas Tree Craft
Ella has been fascinated by sewing for just over a year now. We first started by using a yarn needle and foam sheets with our Angel Finger Puppet around this time last year, and she has slowly graduated to using a proper sewing needle and even taking a class with a sewing machine!
I barely know how to sew myself – I actually think she’s already surpassed me with that skill – so coming up with simple sewing projects has been my way of helping her along with this skill, though I think I may need to find some solid Youtube tutorials soon until we can find another class that works with our schedule.
Of course, you can skip the sewing altogether and glue the pieces together – which would be a great option if you have younger siblings in the mix who also want to make one of these ornaments.
For this felt Christmas Tree Ornament you should use good-quality felt, as I find the cheaper stuff rips easily and can be frustrating. You can use real batting/stuffing, but since this is such a small project we just used cotton balls (which I already have on hand… mostly for sensory bins).
When cutting out the felt shapes, I find the freezer paper method works the best. Essentially, you trace your pattern onto the non-waxy side of freezer paper, cut out the shapes and then iron the waxy side onto the felt to aide with cutting out the shapes. This helps prevent the felt from fraying as you cut it.
This Felt Christmas Tree Craft is an easy sewing project for Christmas and makes a gorgeous handmade gift.

Tip: while we sewed our ornaments onto the tree, you could use a dab of glue to attach mini pom poms or bells if you’d prefer.
How to Make a Felt Christmas Tree Craft
Prepare the patterns from the template and select the felt fabrics for this craft. Trace the template patterns on the selected felt fabrics and cut them out nicely.
Take any one of the tree patterns and the small round shapes. Prepare needle and thread and stitch the round felt cut outs on the tree pattern. I did a simple cross stitch to attach each round cut outs on the tree pattern. Stitch all the round cut outs and you can add more shapes if you want to. Tie a knot on the side of the tree pattern and cut off extra thread once the stitching is done.
Place the plain tree, the stitched tree pattern and the 2 square cut outs on a flat surface.
Hold the square pieces together and place them on the bottom middle part of the plain tree, by overlapping about 1 cm of the squares with the tree.
Now place the stitched tree pattern on the top of the plain one, making sure that all sides of the two tree patterns are matched nicely. Start to stitch from the bottom side.
Stop stitching a cm before reaching the top end of the tree. Cut a small piece of ribbon or felt strip and fold it in half.
Place 2 cm of the folded ribbon or felt strip’s open ends between the tree pattern’s top end. Continue to stitch.
Before closing the stitch keep a small opening for stuffing the tree. Use cotton to stuff the tree through the small open end.
Stitch to secure the stuffing. Tie a knot or 2 and then cut off extra thread.
Place the star cut out on the top end of the tree and do a cross stitch to attach it with the tree.
Tie a knot and cut off extra thread.
