Edible Sugar Cookie Dough Recipe

This soft, creamy Edible Sugar Cookie Dough is completely safe to eat raw and comes together in just minutes with a few common baking ingredients.

By skipping the eggs and heat-treating the flour, we remove the risks normally posed from eating raw cookie dough – so not only can you enjoy spoonful after spoonful to your heart’s content, you can happily share it with friends and family.

Butter, vanilla and almond extracts give the sugar cookie dough its signature warm, buttery flavor, while the heat-treated flour and sugar give this dough the toothsome chew of real sugar cookie dough. If you like the gritty texture of the white sugar, you can enjoy right after making it, but if you prefer to not have that texture, the grittiness will disappear after refrigerating this edible cookie dough in the fridge for an hour (or overnight).

This is a fun recipe to make with the kids and makes a fun option for movie nights, gifting to friends or a sweet treat to keep the kids’ fingers out of the REAL sugar cookie dough while doing some holiday baking.

Edible Sugar Cookie Dough Variations:

  • Brown the butter by melting in a saucepan over medium heat until the milk fats start to caramelize and turn brown
  • Add 1/2 teaspoon of lemon or orange zest for a touch of citrus flavor
  • Use almond flour for a gluten-free option that also skips the need to heat treat the flour
  • Add crushed pretzels, caramel bits or other mix-ins for added texture and flavor
  • Fold in crushed OREO cookies for a cookies-and-cream twist
  • Swap out the vanilla extract for another flavor extract, like lemon extract, for a flavored sugar cookie variation
  • Dye the dough or swap out the sprinkles to suit a variety of different occasions or holidays

How to Serve Edible Sugar Cookie Dough

  • Use as a cookie sandwich filling by spreading between two graham crackers or vanilla wafer cookies
  • Serve with dippables like graham crackers, vanilla wafers, fruit, pretzels, etc.
  • Roll into Tablespoon-sized pieces and refrigerate or freeze for a pre-portioned treat.
  • Add to homemade or store-bought vanilla ice cream to make your own sugar cookie dough ice cream
  • Or, simply serve with a spoon

Can I microwave the flour to heat treat it? Yes, place the flour in a microwave-safe bowl and heat in three 30-second increments, stirring in between, for a total of 90 seconds.

How can I bake this sugar cookie dough? Note that while this sugar cookie dough can be warmed up, it won’t bake up into a cookie if baked since the recipe doesn’t contain any leavening agents.

How to store edible sugar cookie dough: This edible dough can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.
