Homemade Edible Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Recipe
Anyone else actually enjoy the taste and texture of peanut butter cookie dough more than they like peanut butter cookies? For me, the rich flavor and melt-in-your-mouth texture of peanut butter cookie dough is so much more indulgent than their baked counterparts.
While some companies have come out with pre-made cookie doughs that can be safely enjoyed raw, I have not found a pre-made peanut butter cookie dough that is safe to eat without baking. (And to be honest, the two pre-made peanut butter cookie doughs that I know of aren’t even good! Raw or baked!)
So as the latest instalment of my series of Edible Cookie Doughs, I had to whip up a batch of edible peanut butter cookie dough.
Today’s edible peanut butter cookie dough recipe recreates the texture and taste of real peanut butter cookie dough perfectly. The texture is soft and almost fudge-like in its consistency, while the dough is nutty, buttery and just the right balance of sweet and salty. The (optional) peanut butter chips and Reese’s Pieces candies brings even more flavors and textures to the mix.
In addition to skipping the eggs (obviously), we also heat-treat the flour to ensure that you can safely enjoy and share this edible cookie dough recipe.
Edible Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Variations:
- Brown the butter by melting in a saucepan over medium heat until the milk fats start to caramelize and turn brown
- Use almond flour for a gluten-free option that also skips the need to heat treat the flour
- Add sprinkles, caramel bits, chocolate caramel candies or other mix-ins for added texture and flavor
- Add a swirl of Nutella, fudge topping or caramel sauce
- Add more milk to make a less dough-y batter
- Use crunchy peanut butter to add some texture to your cookie dough (or just add in a sprinkle of crushed nuts)

How to Serve Edible Peanut Butter Cookie Dough:
- Use the cookie dough as a cookie sandwich filling by spreading between two graham crackers or peanut butter cookies
- Serve with dippables like graham crackers, vanilla wafers, fruit, pretzels, etc.
- Roll into Tablespoon-sized pieces and refrigerate or freeze for a pre-portioned treat.
- Add to homemade or store-bought vanilla ice cream to make your own peanut butter cookie ice cream
- Or, simply serve with a spoon
Can I microwave the flour to heat treat it? Yes, place the flour in a microwave-safe bowl and heat in three 30-second increments, stirring in between, for a total of 90 seconds.
Why is my cookie dough gritty? The sugar can have a gritty texture in this recipe, however if you refrigerate the cookie dough for an hour, the gritty texture will melt into the cookie dough and disappear.
How can I bake this peanut butter cookie dough? Note that while this peanut butter cookie dough can be warmed up, it won’t bake up into a cookie if cooked since the recipe doesn’t contain any leavening agents.
How to store edible cookie dough: This edible dough can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.
How to freeze edible cookie dough: Wrap the dough well and then place in an airtight, ziptop freezer bag or your favorite freezer containers. (This set of freezer containers is a crazy bargain.) Enjoy within 3 months.
