Today, I’m sharing another fun way to use a box of cake mix: making Light and Fluffy Cake Mix Waffles that are perfectly crispy on the edges and fluffy on the inside. Top these easy cake mix waffles with syrup, cooked fruit, whipped cream and sprinkles, or even ice cream – whatever you desire!

Using cake mix for the batter as a replacement for Belgian waffle mix is a perfect substitution and still results in light and fluffy waffles with perfect crispy edges. So you and I can both enjoy Belgian-style waffles in a fraction of the time and with only 3-4 ingredients.

Belgian Cake Mix Waffles Recipe

I love a good kitchen hack just about as much as I love a good Belgian waffle, so this is one of those occasions where my love for ease combines with my snobbish gourmet preferences.

I grew up only knowing toaster waffles, so when we travelling to Belgium a few years ago and had real Belgian waffles, my world was rocked.

Who knew that waffles could be a gourmet experience? Well, not me – but know that I know better, you better believe that my standards were raised and will never come back down again.

Real Belgian waffle mix is just as finnicky as you would expect – with at least 30 minutes after you mix it before you can cook it on a Belgian waffle maker – but as much as I want real Belgian waffles, I also don’t want to spend more than 30 minutes in the kitchen to whip them up.

Luckily, using cake mix for the batter as a replacement for Belgian waffle mix is a perfect substitution and still results in light and fluffy waffles with perfect crispy edges. So you and I can both enjoy Belgian-style waffles in a fraction of the time and with only 3-4 ingredients.

Cake Mix Waffle Variations:

  • Pour the waffle mixture into shapes on the waffle iron (or use cookie cutters to cut into shapes)
  • Use a waffle iron with a unique design (like our Mickey Waffle maker)
  • Add chocolate chips or sprinkles to the batter
  • Make these in a variety of flavors by swapping out the cake mix flavor:
    • Confetti Cake Mix Waffles
    • Red Velvet Cake Waffles – would be amazing topped with cream cheese syrup!
    • Carrot Cake Waffles
    • Lemon Waffles – top with a variety of berry sauces or jams
    • Strawberry Waffles
  • Make into ice cream sandwiches by adding a scoop of ice cream in between two cake mix waffles

How to store leftover cake mix waffles: Leftover waffles can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days or frozen for up to 2 months. (This set of freezer containers is a crazy bargain.)

Can you make waffles with cake mix? Yes, you can use vanilla cake mix for standard waffles or use a different flavor for a twist on waffles that matches your cake mix’s flavor.

Best recommendation is to use a Belgian waffle maker. (This is the brand I use and I also have this amazing Mickey Waffle maker that also makes crispy, Belgian-stlye waffles perfect for recreating your Disney vacation brunches.)

You can use other types of waffle makers, just note that unless it’s a Belgian waffle maker, it may make softer waffles without that crispy exterior that makes this recipe such a hit with my family.
