Edible Brownie Batter Recipe

Sneaking a spoonful of brownie batter straight from the mixing bowl is one of life’s little pleasures, but as we all know, it comes with a few risks.

So, to enjoy spoonful after spoonful of brownie batter worry-free, I set out to make a safe-to-consume edible brownie batter that tastes just as rich, decadent and fudgy as the real thing.

Skipping the eggs and heat-treating the flour removes the risks normally posed from eating raw brownie batter. We also skip ingredients like baking powder that aren’t necessary if we’re not actually baking the dough.

This edible brownie batter recipe is the height of indulgence with pure chocolatey flavor and a delightful toothsome texture.

No bake brownie batter is easy enough for kids to make independently, though you might want to heat-treat the flour yourself if your kids are younger. Let them customize their brownie batter with our variations below.

Edible Brownie Batter Variations:

  • Brown the butter by melting in a saucepan over medium heat until the milk fats start to caramelize and turn brown
  • Use almond flour for a gluten-free option that also skips the need to heat treat the flour
  • Add sprinkles, crushed pretzels, caramel bits or other mix-ins for added texture and flavor
  • Fold in crushed OREO cookies for a cookies-and-cream twist
  • Add a swirl of Nutella, caramel sauce or peanut butter
  • Add 1 teaspoon of instant espresso powder to intensify the chocolate flavor and add depth
  • Add more milk to make a less dough-y batter and one that more closely resembles softer brownie batter
  • Swap out the vanilla extract for another flavor extract, like mint or raspberry

How to Serve Edible Brownie Batter:

  • Use the brownie batter as a cookie sandwich filling by spreading between two graham crackers or vanilla wafer cookies
  • Serve with dippables like graham crackers, vanilla wafers, fruit, pretzels, etc.
  • Roll into Tablespoon-sized pieces and refrigerate or freeze for a pre-portioned treat.
  • Add to homemade or store-bought vanilla ice cream to make your own brownie batter ice cream
  • Or, simply serve with a spoon

Can I microwave the flour to heat treat it? Yes, place the flour in a microwave-safe bowl and heat in three 30-second increments, stirring in between, for a total of 90 seconds.

How can I bake this brownie batter? Note that while this brownie batter can be warmed up, it won’t bake up into a brownie if cooked since the recipe doesn’t contain any leavening agents.

How to store edible brownie batter: This edible dough can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.

How to freeze edible brownie batter: Wrap the dough well and then place in an airtight, ziptop freezer bag or your favorite freezer containers. (This set of freezer containers is a crazy bargain.) Enjoy within 3 months.

  • Electric Mixer <– this is a great hand mixer if you don’t want to make the investment into a stand mixer
  • Whisk or Spatula <– I like these spatulas because they are one solid piece and don’t have removable heads for bacteria to get trapped underneath. Plus they are heat-resistant and have a lifetime warranty.
