Rapunzel Movie Night

My daughter loves our monthly Disney movie night tradition, and this month I’m sharing one that we did a while ago: a Rapunzel Family Movie night with a cute craft, movie-inspired menu and simple table decor.

A fun Disney movie night inspired by Rapunzel in Tangled. Hazelnut soup, homemade garlic bread braids, a skillet chocolate chip cookie and even a Rapunzel cocktail for the adults! Plus crafts and decor ideas

Rapunzel Movie Night

For our family movie nights, I always try to develop a fun menu themed on the movie (or the culture the movie is from), prepare a fun craft for Ella to make, and add some fun decor to our living room to make our movie night extra-special.

For our Rapunzel Movie night, we focused a lot of time on our menu and our super cute Rapunzel Yarn Braid craft, and kept the decor a bit more simple than usual – but I think it still looked super cute and Ella was so proud to be involved in every step of the movie night prepping.

If you’re planning a Disney trip anytime in the future, this is a fun way to build anticipation and count down to your trip. If you have kids with distinctly different movie tastes, try alternating who gets to pick the movie and get everyone involved in planning the menu and activities.

Disney’s Rapunzel Movie Night Menu

Often, I use our family movie nights as an opportunity to introduce a new food to Ella. It’s a great way to make trying something new a bit more fun – especially if the tie-in to the movie is super obvious.

For our Tangled movie night, I wanted to develop a recipe for Rapunzel’s favorite: hazelnut soup! I kept the rest of the menu simple and stuck to foods I knew would go over well.

For our movie night, I served:

You don’t need plenty of time or a crazy elaborate meal to make a fun, themed movie night extra-special.

Other meal ideas that would be great for a Rapunzel Movie Night include:

  • Spaghetti (representing Rapunzel’s hair)
  • Anything cooked in a skillet
  • Broccoli Braid
  • Fondue (reference to the candles in the lanterns in the movie)
  • Taco boats
  • Rapunzel is a salad green (field salad) – so a green salad would be perfect

Rapunzel Movie Night Decor

We kept the decor really simple for this movie night so we could focus on our craft and menu.

We simply put a pink tablecloth on our table and Ella scattered it with pink and white fake flowers and then added some pretty Rapunzel-inspired sequin confetti.

You could do some thing really creative with the tower theme, put up some lanterns, or string some yellow yarn up all around the room.

I usually just wander around the house and grab anything that will work for the theme and bring it into the living room for the night. Flowers, star decor, Rapunzel toys, building blocks, wicker baskets, painting supplies – they would all be great for setting the tone without a lot of extra work.

Disney’s Rapunzel Craft

For her craft, Ella made a Rapunzel Yarn Braid Headband which can be worn over and over again for princess dress-up.

Materials to a Rapunzel Yarn Braid:

  • Yellow Yarn
  • Scissors
  • Fabric flowers
  • Glue of choice
  • 2 elastics
  • Ribbon or colored yarn, optional
  • Large poster board (the kind used for presentations)

Garlic Bread Braids Recipe

This simple garlic bread looks super cute for our Rapunzel theme and is so easy to make, Ella did them with just a little bit of guidance! You could use a from-scratch bread dough, but we went with crescent roll dough.

GARLIC BREAD BRAID INGREDIENTS

  • Crescent Roll Dough
  • Garlic
  • Cheese
  • Butter

Hazelnut Soup Recipe

Hazelnut soup is mentioned in the movie as Rapunzel’s favorite! It took a lot of research to find out what hazelnut soup is and even more research to find some old recipes. It’s basically a parsnip soup with some roasted hazelnuts blended in.

HAZELNUT SOUP INGREDIENTS

  • Olive oil
  • Onion
  • Garlic
  • Parsnips
  • Potato
  • Hazelnuts
  • Mushrooms, optional garnish

Skillet Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

Inspired by the skillet that Rapunzel whacks Flynn with AND all of that baking that Rapunzel does in the tower, this giant chocolate chip cookie is a fun and super easy dessert for family movie night. We made our cookie dough from scratch, but you can definitely take a shortcut and use pre-made cookie dough.

SKILLET CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE INGREDIENTS

  • Brown butter (see instructions in post)
  • Shortening
  • White granulated sugar
  • Brown sugar
  • Vanilla extract
  • Molasses
  • Eggs
  • All-purpose flour
  • Salt
  • Baking soda
  • Cinnamon
  • Milk chocolate chips

Rapunzel Champagne Cocktail

I wanted to do a champagne cocktail for Rapunzel’s bubbly personality, and I love any excuse to use Elderflower – plus it’s a subtle nod to all of Rapunzel’s flower picking and the flowers that get braided into her hair. I also made some quick flower picks for our cocktails to keep Ella’s non-alcoholic cordial separate from my cocktail.

Planning Your Own Family Movie Night

I’ve made this free Family Movie Night planning sheet for you to plan your own movie night – whether that be for Disney’s Tangled or another family favourite.

If you don’t already have the movie, you can rent it on Prime here.

The first couple times you host a family movie night, try to take it easy – stick to recipes that you’ve tried before, pick a craft or activity well within the kids’ skill level, and don’t over plan the night. The movie will probably get started later than you expected and the kids might be a little over-excited at the new family tradition (especially if eating supper in front of the TV)!

We originally tried to do these weekly, but for now doing them every 2 weeks has allowed them to still be a fun family time that we look forward to, without feeling like just another thing I have to schedule and plan for.
Pirates of the Caribbean family movie night with complete menu (Jamaican tossed salad, jerk shrimp, banana fritters, and Jamaican rum punch), fun craft for the kids to do while everything is cooking, and a free printable to plan your own family movie night. Disney movie nights are a fun way to count down to a Disney vacation or just establish a fun family tradition
