Thin Mint Muddy Buddies Recipe
Muddy buddies are one of my go-to desserts for gifting or entertaining since it takes only a few minutes to whip up a TON and it is one of those treats that everyone who tries it seems to love!
A classic peanut butter-chocolate or our lemon muddy buddies are my favourites, though I honestly have loved every single flavour variety I have tried. (Check out our full list of all of the different flavours of muddy buddies we have created below.)
Andes Muddy Buddies are crisp and minty, with a sweet cocoa and powdered sugar dusting. The flavour is similar to a mint chocolate truffle and they have an undeniably satisfying crunch.
To gift these thin mint muddy buddies, you can use little cellopane treat baggies, pretty ziptop baggies or even mason jars. I like to add in a few chopped thin mints into the mix to ensure the recipient can tell what flavour to expect.
Andes Muddy Buddies Variations:
- Nutty Mint Crunch: Fold in ½ cup finely chopped toasted almonds or hazelnuts before shaking with the powdered sugar.
- Mocha Mint: Replace half of the cocoa powder with instant espresso powder to bring a subtle coffee note.
- White Chocolate Swirl: Melt 2 to 3 ounces of white chocolate separately, drizzle it over the finished mix on the sheet pan, and let it set for a marbled effect (or do this with melted Andes mints or even green candy melts).
- Grasshopper Cookie Muddy Buddies: Mix in ½ cup crushed OREOs right before spreading the cereal out to set.
- Toasted Coconut Mint: Fold in ¼ cup unsweetened toasted coconut flakes for a light, nut-free crunch.

Andes Muddy Buddies FAQs
Can I use another cereal besides Chex? Yes, Crispix or an unsweetened corn or rice square cereal works similarly, but anything denser won’t coat as evenly.
Why do my melted Andes mints look thick or slightly grainy? They may have overheated or water may have gotten into the melted chocolate, causing it to seize. Mint chocolate melts more quickly than conventional chocolate, so short bursts in the microwave with frequent stirring keep it smooth.
What’s the difference between puppy chow and muddy buddies? Puppy chow and muddy buddies are the exact same thing, the best I can tell is that it’s called puppy chow in the midwest (because of it’s physical resemblance to puppy chow) and muddy buddies everywhere else.
Traditional puppy chow is made with peanut butter and chocolate, melted together and then use to coat Chex cereal before being tossed in powdered sugar.
How to store muddy buddies: Muddy buddies can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week (if it doesn’t disappear faster in your house) or can be frozen in an airtight freezer bag or your favorite freezer containers for up to two months. (This set of freezer containers is a crazy bargain.) They will soften overtime so they are best enjoyed within the week.

- Spatula <– I like these spatulas because they are one solid piece and don’t have removable heads for bacteria to get trapped underneath. Plus they are heat-resistant and have a lifetime warranty.
