Traditional puppy chow is made with peanut butter and chocolate, melted together and then use to coat Chex cereal before being tossed in powdered sugar, and while that is always a welcome treat, if I’m known for one thing – it’s for creating fun adaptions of classic recipes.

Today’s chocolate-covered strawberry muddy buddies features a blend of strawberry-coated white chocolate Chex cereal along with double-chocolate Chex cereal to deliver a decadent strawberry and chocolate flavor.

Even with the chocolate and powdered sugar coating, the Chex cereal stays crunchy, making it a satisfying crunchy and sweet treat.

It’s perfect for Valentine’s Day, baby showers or a special birthday treat.

If gifting, opt for the Gluten-free Chex Cereal options and possibly a dairy-free chocolate.

Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Muddy Buddies Variations:

  • Add M&Ms or sprinkles
  • Add dehydrated strawberries to the final mix
  • Add strawberry or tutty-fruity marshmallows (or Marshmallow Bits)
  • Add chopped strawberry wafer cookies
  • Use exclusively chocolate-covered Chex and add strawberry flavoring
  • Or use exclusively chocolate-covered Chex and coat in the dehydrated strawberry and icing sugar coating
  • Add in the new Strawberry Cheerios
  • Use strawberry cake mix instead of the powdered sugar and dehydrated strawberry coating if you can’t easily source dehydrated strawberries
  • Skip the chocolate-coated cereal for a strawberries and cream variation

What’s the difference between puppy chow and muddy buddies? Puppy chow and muddy buddies are the exact same thing, the best I can tell is that it’s called puppy chow in the midwest (because of it’s physical resemblance to puppy chow) and muddy buddies everywhere else.

How to store muddy buddies: Muddy buddies can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week (if it doesn’t disappear faster in your house) or can be frozen in an airtight freezer bag or your favorite freezer containers for up to two months. (This set of freezer containers is a crazy bargain.) They will soften overtime so they are best enjoyed within the week.

The below video shows how to make a standard muddy buddy recipe (with melted chocolate chips and peanut butter) but I thought I’d include it in this post just in case:
