Fried S’mores Wontons Recipe
Summer never lasts long enough for me. No matter how many trips to the beach or bonfire nights we have when the weather is warm, I find myself missing all things summer once the air gets chilly.
Maybe that’s why I’ve developed so many s’mores-inspired desserts on this site. They bring back that quintessential summer flavor combination – but without the need to build a bonfire.
Today’s s’mores wontons feature golden, crispy and crunchy wontons enveloping a filling of ooey gooey marshmallow and melted chocolate.
It’s decadent yet simple, a fun option for movie night or entertaining and pretty easy to make with little helpers (at least when it comes to assembling them).
While frying them can be a bit messy, eating them is pretty much mess-free, unlike traditional s’mores.
For an even more decadent treat, serve these with a dessert dip – even something as simple as a small bowl of Cool Whip or our Caramel Dessert Dip recipe.
While you can use an egg wash to seal the wonton wrappers, I simply used water – if your wontons are not sealing well with just water, try whisking an egg with 1-2 Tablespoons of water and use that to seal the wontons before frying.
The most important thing is that the edges are completely sealed – if they aren’t, the filling can leak out but the oil will definitely find it’s way into the wonton and burn the filling.
How to make s’mores wontons in the air fryer: I have not made this recipe in my air fryer YET but if you wanted to make s’mores wontons in the air fryer, spritz them with oil and airfry for 4 minutes at 350F.
How to make s’mores wontons in the oven: If you want to make this s’mores wonton recipe in the oven, coat a baking tray well with oil, place the wontons on the sheet and spray well with oil. Bake the wontons at 425F for 2-3 minutes. Note that baking in the oven will not result in perfectly golden, crispy wontons like frying does.
S’mores Wonton Variations:
- Sprinkle freshly fried wontons with cinnamon-sugar
- Use a teaspoon of Nutella instead of chocolate chips
- Add a few graham cracker crumbs to the filling
- Swap out the chocolate chips for white chocolate chips, flavoured chips (like peanut butter, pumpkin spice, etc) or even candy melts
- Sprinkle the cooled wontons with powdered sugar for an extra touch of sweetness
- Add a caramel bit or cut-up piece of caramel square to the filling (I wouldn’t personally use caramel sauce because I’d worry that it would burn with frying)
- If you don’t mind a bit of extra work, you can toast the marshmallows quickly under the broiler of your oven to incorporate a toasted marshmallow flavor into the wontons. The marshmallows should be completely cooled before adding to the wontons (so they are less messy to work with).
- Also, there are many different ways to fold wontons (I show different methods in our different wonton recipes) and while this method is very easy, you can simply fold in half to form a triangle if you find this method a bit tricky or are making this recipe with kids
How to store: These s’mores wontons are best enjoyed within a day of preparing, but they can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Can s’mores wontons be frozen? Yes! Place the fried wontons in airtight freezer bags or freezer containers for up to 2 months.
How to reheat s’mores wontons: To reheat these s’mores wontons, you can reheat in either the oven or an air fryer:
- To reheat s’mores wontons in the oven, heat oven to 350F and warm the wontons for 5 minutes
- To reheat s’mores wontons in the air fryer, heat air fryer to 375F and warm the wontons for 3 minutes
