Pizza Egg Rolls Recipe

These Pizza Egg Rolls are the ultimate in late night snacking, family movie night, junk food mash-up indulgence.

You get all of that ooey, gooey cheese and your favorite pizza flavors, all wrapped up in a golden, crunchy and sweet egg roll wrapper. Dip it in some marinara sauce and you’re in appetizer heaven.

This is a simple 5 minute-prep recipe that kids can help make – and any kid would be excited to eat.

Now, you can definitely overcomplicate this recipe by making a from-scratch sausage, vegetable and cheese filling. By all means, that will be delicious and you won’t regret the extra effort. (The next time I make this I promised Ella I would do sausage, mushrooms, bacon and pepperoni – her favorite pizza toppings.) However, today we’re serving up a standard version, that you can take and run with to make your own.

Also, because I had kids in mind for this recipe, you’ll notice that unlike a lot of other pizza rolls recipes, mine serves the sauce on the side and not in the egg roll. This is great for picky eaters who don’t like the sauce, but my reasoning is actually that the sauce can get pretty hot after frying and I don’t want to serve something that’s going to burn their tongues or chins. (Kids are not the best at eating cautiously.)

You can use an air fryer for this recipe if you’d prefer: Set your air fryer to 375ºF. Cook the egg rolls for 7 minutes, then flip and cook for another 4-5 minutes. Depending on the model of air fryer you have, you may want to brush the egg rolls with a light layer of oil to assist with frying and prevent them from sticking to the fryer.

Tips for Perfect Egg Rolls

Egg rolls may look super complicated but they couldn’t be easier! If you can roll a burrito or sandwich wrap, you can make an egg roll.

  1. Make sure you pick the right wraps.
Egg roll wrappers are wheat wonton wrappers. I often find them in the produce section in my grocery, beside the rice paper wrappers. Do not use rice paper wrappers as they are meant for spring rolls and will not work in this recipe.
  2. Don’t overstuff your rolls
While it may be tempting to try to get as much filling into each roll as possible, if you stuff them too full they will rip or possibly open in the fryer and be ruined. (Not to mention being a pain to clean up.)
  3. Completely seal each egg roll
Using water, completely close each egg roll to ensure the filling stays inside. Once the dough is wet and pressed together, it should almost seem glued shut. If yours opens, re-wet and re-seal.
  4. Wait until your oil is hot before frying
If you add the egg rolls to the dough before it’s hot enough, the rolls will just absorb the oil and become soggy. Wait until the oil reaches 375ºF.
