Homemade Italian Seasoning Recipe
I don’t think it will come as any surprise given the amount of Italian recipes on this site that I’m part Italian! My paternal grandfather was Italian, and some of my best food memories growing up were our giant family get-togethers featuring table upon table of mouth-watering Italian food.
I go through a LOT of Italian Seasoning mix and if I didn’t make my own, it would be crazy expensive!
To make my own, I often buy my spices from a bulk store, or if that’s not an option, buy the large containers of the individual spices and herbs. Buying the little containers to make this seasoning would be just as expensive as buying the pre-mixed seasoning.
You can also dry your own herbs to use for this homemade seasoning!
Not only is making my own Italian seasoning way cheaper than buying the store mixes, I’m able to adjust the quantities of each individual spice to suit my personal tastes and avoid the preservatives in conventional mixes (like maltodextrin which has some serious health risks and monosodium glutamine (MSG) which is used as a flavor enhancer).
(I’m giving you a pretty straightforward and evenly balanced mix in the recipe below, so you can adjust based on your preferences. My dad LOVES oregano, so I usually bump up the amount I use when I make this mix for him.)
While I am definitely not the mom who avoids a treat, if I can avoid ingredients that pose a threat to my family’s health, I’m going to – and I’m going to feel a lot better about serving food seasoned with my own seasoning mix to my family.
This homemade Italian seasoning is shelf-stable for up to a year, as long as you use fresh (dried) herbs and spices when you make it and store in a cool, dry spot in your kitchen.
You can use a spice grinder to blitz this Italian mixture into a uniform texture. This ensures that every teaspoon is perfectly balanced, as the powdered ingredients can settle in the bottom.
This seasoning is gluten-free, paleo, low-carb and vegan and makes a great homemade gift.
What is Italian seasoning made of? Our Italian seasoning is made with rosemary, oregano, basil, thyme, garlic powder, onion powder and salt. You can omit the garlic powder, onion powder and salt if you usually use fresh garlic and onions in your recipes, but I don’t mind having that extra hit even though I usually do use fresh as well.
Some people also like adding parsley, red chile flakes, marjoram, sage, cilantro and savory in their Italian seasoning, so definitely add whatever sounds delicious to you!
