Valentine’s Pipe Cleaner Craft

How cute are these pipe cleaner flowers?!

This creative craft is courtesy of my daughter, Ella, who came up with the concept all by herself. I asked if she would show me how she did it so I could take pictures and share them with you.

Not only are these heart flowers super cute (especially arranged as a little bouquet), they also serve as a great fine motor craft for kids.

By shaping, winding and twisting the pipe cleaners into a variety of shapes, kids develop their pincer grip (needed for writing), develop finger dexterity, and also build finger strength. These important skills help equip children for writing, and other everyday activities that involve finger strength and precision.

I love how the little flowers look like floating heart balloons, or little heart-shaped kites. They are so whimsical and fun!

To add additional visual interest and sensory fun, use a variety of different pipe cleaners (fluffy, metallic, regular, etc) and add some embellishments like beads or ribbon to add onto the individual pipe cleaners.

How to Make Pipe Cleaner Flowers

To form the heart of our pipe cleaner flowers, we found it easiest to make a circle first, by twisting the two ends of a pipe cleaner around each other to secure the pipe cleaner and then shape it into a circle by pulling it.

Next, we shaped the circle into a heart by indenting the pipe cleaner at the connection point to make the top of the heart, and then squeezing one side to form a corner for the bottom of the heart.

Next, we wrapped a pipe cleaner around the bottom of the heart to form the flower’s stem.

Next, take other pipe cleaners and wrap them around the heart, as desired.

You can also add beads or embellishments to these extra pipe cleaners to give your heart flowers more visual interest.
