Nutella Donuts Recipe Recipe

While I have several from-scratch donut recipes on the blog, I’ll be completely honest with you: 9/10 if I’m going to make homemade donuts, I’m going to use our biscuit donuts hack.

By using pre-made biscuit dough to make the donuts, we significantly cut down on the mess, prep time and eliminate any need to allow the dough to rise.

Despite all of the time savings and the short list of 3(!) ingredients, these donuts are still delicious: golden, crispy fried dough with a pillowy soft interior, creamy chocolate-hazelnut filling and a generous dusting of sweet powdered sugar.

Plus, since you are making these donuts yourself, you can fill half with Nutella and half with jam – or check out our other variations below to make your Nutella donuts uniquely your own!

Variations on Nutella-Filled Powdered Donuts:

  • bake the donuts instead of frying (Heat oven to 350F, brush the unbaked donuts with butter before baking for 8-10 minutes.)
  • use the air fryer (Heat to 350F, add 1 Tablespoon of oil to the airfryer and place the donuts inside – spray with a bit extra oil, if desired. Bake for 5-8 minutes.)
  • swap out the Nutella filling for jam, peanut butter or fruit curds
  • add orange zest to the powdered sugar coating for a citrus twist
  • or, add cocoa powder to the powdered sugar coating for double the chocolate flavor

Tips for the best biscuit donuts:

  • enjoy within 2 days – this will be easy because they will disappear quickly!
  • stretch the donut before frying to prevent them from being too thick
  • keep oil temperature at 350F – use a candy thermometer to keep an eye on the temperature. Too low and they will soak up the oil, too high and they will burn or overcook on the outside while not fully cooking on the inside
  • store at room temperature in an airtight container

Can I air-fry these donut instead of frying? Yes, heat the air fryer to 350F, add 1 Tablespoon of oil to the airfryer and place the donuts inside – spray with a bit extra oil, if desired. Bake for 5-8 minutes. Note that the texture will be slightly different than properly frying.

How do I store leftover donuts? Store leftover donut holes in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days. If keeping them longer, refrigerate for up to 5 days. The texture will be softest on the day they’re made.

Can I freeze these Nutella-filled donuts? I personally don’t recommend freezing these donuts as the filling texture will change and the powdered sugar can’t be added before freezing. Since this recipe is so quick and easy, I recommend just making within a day or two of when you plan to consume.
