Cinnamon Sugar Biscuit Dough Donut Recipe

While my daughter would tell you that the ultimate fall treat is a pumpkin spice latte, in my opinion, the taste of fall is a warm mug of apple cider with a side of these cinnamon sugar donuts.

Cinnamon sugar donuts are soft and pillowy with a warm & sweet cinnamon sugar coating, and are made even more irresistible with how easy they are to make! By using our favorite biscuit donut hack, you skip all of the hassle of making a homemade donut dough and waiting for it to rise.

From start to finish, you can whip up these easy cinnamon sugar donuts in less than 30 minutes, making it a sweet treat to welcome guests with or enjoy on a chilly fall day.

If you don’t have biscuit dough available, you can use pre-made pizza dough or pastry dough for a flakier donut (similar to a cronut).

Variations on Cinnamon Sugar Donuts:

  • Bake the donuts instead of frying (Heat oven to 350F, brush the unbaked donuts with butter before baking for 8-10 minutes.)
  • Swap out the cinnamon sugar (or just the sugar) for colored sugar crystals
  • Swap out the cinnamon for pumpkin spice for a fall twist
  • Swap out the cinnamon for orange or lemon zest
  • Dip just the tops of the donuts in the cinnamon sugar for a less messy eating experience
  • Make cinnamon sugar donut holes instead of full-sized donuts

Tips for the best biscuit donuts:

  • enjoy within 2 days – this will be easy because they will disappear quickly!
  • stretch the donut before frying and make the donut hole wider to get the best shape and prevent them from being too thick
  • keep oil temperature at 350F – use a candy thermometer to keep an eye on the temperature. Too low and they will soak up the oil, too high and they will burn or overcook on the outside while not fully cooking on the inside
  • store at room temperature in an airtight container

Can I air-fry these donuts instead of frying? Yes, heat the air fryer to 350F, add 1 Tablespoon of oil to the airfryer and place the cut donuts inside – spray with a bit extra oil, if desired. Bake for 5-8 minutes.

How do I store leftover donuts? Store leftover donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days. If keeping them longer, refrigerate for up to 5 days. The texture will be softest on the day they’re made.

Can I freeze the donuts? Yes, after preparing the donuts according to the recipe, allow them to cool. Store in a freezer-safe bag or your favorite freezer containers for up to two months. (This set of freezer containers is a crazy bargain.)

Tip: you will need approximately 4 cups of oil to fry the donut holes, but the amount will differ based on the size of your dutch oven or whatever you are using to fry them. You want at least 3-4″ of depth. You can use peanut, canola or vegetable oil.

Remove from the hot oil to a paper-towel lined pan.

If you dip the donuts in the cinnamon sugar mixture while they are still hot, you do not need the melted butter, but if they are too hot for you to handle, dip them in the melted butter and then the cinnamon sugar mixture in order to coat evenly.
