A delightful, buttery lemon shortbread cookie inspired by the Girl Scouts’ Savannah Smiles, a discontinued lemon cookie whose half-circle shape looks like a smile - and is guaranteed to put one on your face after you taste them!

Girls Scouts’ Savannah Smiles Cookie Recipe

Savannah Smiles were a Girl Scouts’ cookie named after Savannah, Georgia – the city where Girl Scouts’ was founded (and the birthplace of its founder, Juliette Gordon Low) and the Brownie song “Smiles.”

When they were launched, Girl Scouts described Savannah Smiles by saying: “This lemon wedge cookie is cool and crisp, with just the right number of lemon chips to deliver tiny bursts of happiness. And, when you hold it right, you’ll quickly be reminded of that world-famous ‘Girl Scout Smile’.”

Sadly, they were discontinued in 2019 and replaced with Lemon-Ups and Lemonades, which are iced/glazed lemon shortbread cookies, so the only option to enjoy a batch of Savannah Smiles anymore is to whip them up yourself!

(Luckily, this recipe yields a big batch, so you will have plenty to enjoy – and possibly share!)

Savannah Smiles Variations:

To give your Savannah Smiles cookies a unique twist, you can:

  • Use lime juice and lime zest for a lime shortbread cookie
  • Or orange juice and orange zest for an orange shortbread cookie
  • Dip cooled cookies in white chocolate instead of coating in powdered sugar
  • Cut the cookies into a different shape (or just plain rounds instead of half-circles)
  • Add crushed, dehydrated fruits like dehydrated strawberries, raspberries or blueberries for a fruity touch (you can add this to the dough or finely crush and sift them into the powdered sugar)
  • Add a couple drops of lemon flavor oil or lemon flavor extract for even more profound lemon flavor.
