Blueberry Cream Cheese Danishes Recipe

Funny enough, I’ve only ever shared one other danish recipe on Sugar, Spice and Glitter and it was a Heart-Shaped Strawberry Danish recipe! I guess when I think danishes, I think of love and berries.

These heart shaped blueberry cream cheese danishes feature crisp, buttery layers of puff pastry with a tender center filled with tangy lemon-infused cream cheese and thick, homemade blueberry compote.

The lemon brightens the cream cheese filling and keeps the sweetness balanced, while playing beautifully with the sweet-tart notes of the blueberry.

You also get a bit of texture contrast in every bite: delicate flakes, smooth cream and soft, jammy fruit. A good blend and balance of different textures is always key for me in a winning dessert.

While you can make homemade puff pastry, I personally opted for frozen puff pastry. I’ve made homemade puff pastry exactly once and the time, cost and effort involved was not worth it compared to a half-decent, frozen grocery store version. Using pre-made allows me to save time and makes it more likely that I’ll be agreeable to making these again in the future when my family starts generously hinting about how good they were…

This heart shaped blueberry cream cheese danish recipe uses frozen puff pastry, a quick blueberry sauce and a simple lemon cream cheese filling to create bakery style pastries at home.

Why You’ll Love This Blueberry Danish Recipe

  • A custom bakery-quality treat without having to make your own pastry dough (thanks to store-bought butter puff pastry).
  • Wonderful flavor balance between the tangy lemon cream cheese, sweet and tart blueberries and buttery buff pastry.
  • You can customize the shape or fruit fillings to suite any season or special occasion.
  • Can be prepped ahead the night before for a sweet breakfast surprise (perfect for Valentine’s or birthdays).

Snackable History Fact: Danish pastries trace back to laminated dough techniques introduced to Denmark in the 19th century by Austrian bakers, a cross pollination that created the buttery, layered style now associated with “Danishes” around the world. The cream cheese and fruit version is a North American evolution, a practical, crowd pleasing filling that sets cleanly and travels well.

Recipe FAQs

Should I use fresh or frozen blueberries?

Either works. Frozen berries release more liquid, so cook the sauce a minute or two longer to thicken.

Can I make these ahead?

Assemble and refrigerate the shaped pastries for up to 8 hours, then bake straight from the fridge.

Can I freeze the baked danishes?

Yes, these can be stacked in a airtight freezer container or freezer bag (with a small sheet of parchment paper separating each danish) for up to 2 months.
Reheat from frozen in a 325°F oven until crisp again, about 8 to 10 minutes.

How to store leftover blueberry cream cheese danishes:

If being consumed the same day, they can stay at room temperature.
Otherwise, store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Line the container with paper towel to absorb moisture. The pastries will soften in the fridge so you may want to reheat in the oven or airfryer to regain their crispiness.

  • Cream cheese – opt for full fat, brick-style cream cheese
  • White granulated sugar

  • Lemon juice

Optional Garnish: lemon zest or powdered sugar

Tip: Frozen blueberries are a great option if making these when blueberries are out of season (and pricey to buy fresh). You can also buy frozen wild blueberries year-round and they are my personal favorite for a consistently sweet flavor.

How to Make Blueberry Cream Cheese Danishes

For the lemon cream cheese filling: In a mixing bowl add the cream cheese, sugar, lemon juice and egg. (If using fresh lemon, add a bit of lemon zest as well.)

Use a hand mixer to combine all these ingredients until smooth and creamy. Set aside.

For the blueberry sauce: In a saucepan over medium heat add the blueberries, white sugar and lemon juice.

Stir together every couple minutes and let cook until a thick blueberry sauce forms, about 8 minutes.

Optionally, strain the blueberry sauce from the whole blueberries and keep the sauce and blueberries in separate bowls to give you better control when filling the danishes. (You will still use both components, so don’t toss either.)

Assemble the danishes: Preheat the oven to 375F. Prepare a parchment covered baking sheet and set aside.

Remove puff pastry from the freezer and let thaw for 10 minutes

Open up the puff pastry and cut out as many hearts you can with the cookie cutter.

Use a paring knife to cut another heart in the center following the exact shape of the cut out pastry dough about ¾ inch from the edge of the dough. You are just creating separation for the edges of the pastry to rise and center to stay held down with the filling, so do not cut out this center heart fully.

Fill the center of each puff pastry with a scoop of the cream cheese filling spreading to fully fill the inner heart you outlined with the paring knife. Place a couple blueberries on top of the cream cheese filling.

Bake the danishes: Brush the edges of the puff pastry with egg wash.

Place in the oven and bake for 12-15 minutes or until the pastry edges are golden brown.

Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes.

Drizzle with the blueberries sauce and top with some lemon zest or powdered sugar.

Blueberry Danish Recipe Variations:

  • Vanilla-Lemon Cream Filling: Add a dash of vanilla extract (or a 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla bean paste) for a decadent lemon-vanilla cream cheese filling.
  • Mixed Berry Heart: Swap half the blueberries for raspberries or blackberries (or swap out the blueberries for another preference entirely).
  • Almond Crunch: After brushing the pastries with egg wash, sprinkle on some sliced almonds.
  • Chocolate Blueberry Danishes: Stir a handful of chocolate chips into the cream cheese mixture. (For a double-chocolate flavor, mix in a couple tablespoons of cocoa powder, too!)
  • Change the shape: While we’re partial to heart-shaped danishes here, you can swap out the shape to suite any occasion – or simply slice into classic rectangles.
  • If making in a pinch, you can swap out our homemade blueberry syrup for a favorite jam or compote.

Tips for the Perfect Blueberry Danish

  • Use full fat block cream cheese (and not the kind that comes in a tub for spreading).
  • Taste the blueberries before cooking and add extra sugar only if they are tart. Frozen blueberries are often a better bet during off-season, and wild blueberries are personally my favorite for sweet flavor.
  • Chill the cut pastry hearts for 10 minutes before baking to help the edges rise higher.
  • Beat the cream cheese filling just until smooth, as overmixing incorporates air and can cause cracks.
  • Let the blueberry sauce cool slightly before spooning onto the pastries so the sauce thickens up slightly.
  • If you forgot to thaw your puff pastry ahead of time, my friend Jessica shared 3 easy ways to quickly thaw it here.
  • When purchasing your puff pastry, opt for one that uses butter instead of shortening, like this one on Amazon.
  • Visual cues, like the dough turning golden and crispy, is more important than bake time as ovens can cary and so can brands of dough.
