Soft and fluffy Hawaiian Dinner Rolls with that perfect sweet and buttery flavor we all know and love in this classic bread roll. Perfect for an easy side dish or using for slider buns or breakfast sandwiches.

Hawaiian Rolls Recipe

For some reason, Hawaiian Dinner Rolls are not sold regularly in my city. I usually do a monthly grocery shop about an hour away in a city with more selection, but even when I buy several packages, we go through them super quickly!

We use them for our favorite sliders recipes, in bread puddings, as an easy side with dinner, toasted for breakfast sandwiches… and before you know it, we’ve run out!

So, for those days when there are none of our favorite rolls in sight and we’re still a couple of weeks from our big grocery shop, I needed to figure out the perfect Hawaiian dinner rolls recipe that had that same classic slightly sweet and buttery flavor with that perfect golden top and chewy, fluffy inside… and after several failed batches, I think I’ve nailed it.

If you have a stand mixer, it really does all of the work for you with this recipe. All you need to do is:

  • Measure out the ingredients
  • Combine in your mixer
  • Knead in your mixer
  • Cover to let rise
  • Divide into individual balls for a second rise
  • Brush with egg white and bake

Super simple!

If you don’t have a stand mixer, you can use a hand mixer with a dough hook or knead by hand. It’s only 5-7 minutes of kneading and you can usually get the kids to help out with a couple of those minutes!

Can you freeze these Hawaiian Dinner Rolls? Yes! Wrap and place in an airtight ziptop bag and freeze for up to two months. Beyond that, you may experience a texture difference.

You can also freeze the unbaked rolls before the second rise. Allow them to come to room temperature and then rise for 1 hour before proceeding with brushing with egg whites and baking, as directed.

Can I use active dry yeast instead of instant yeast? To use active dry yeast, you will need to warm your pineapple and milk mixture to 90ºF before adding to the stand mixer and then let sit for 5 minutes before proceeding with the recipe. I personally do not recommend this substitution as it will affect rise times, but if it’s all you can find, it will work.

How to Make Hawaiian Sweet Rolls

In a large bowl, combine 3 cups of the flour, salt and instant yeast.

Stir well to combine dry ingredients and then make a well in the centre.

In a separate bowl or measuring cup, combine the pineapple juice, buttermilk and vanilla extract. Add the brown sugar and stir to dissolve.

Pour the wet ingredients into the centre of the dry ingredients.

Add the softened butter, 2 of the eggs plus 1 egg yolk.

Stir well to combine and form a soft dough.

Knead the dough by hand or with an electric mixer until it appears elastic and forms a soft well ball that pulls away from the sides of the bowl, adding up to one cup more flour as needed. It took me about 6-7 minutes.

(This is a stickier dough – it will not form the same cohesive ball as a harder, proofed dough. Avoid the temptation to add more than 5 cups of flour.)

Cover the dough with plastic wrap and a clean kitchen towel and place in a warm area of your kitchen to rise for 2 hours.

Once risen, punch down the dough and divide into 20 equal balls of dough.

Grease a 9” x 13” casserole dish AND a 8” x 8” casserole dish and place the balls of dough equal distance apart in each.

Place the plastic wrap and kitchen towel back over the casserole dish and allow to rise again for 1 1/2 hours.

Preheat oven to 350F

Brush the risen rolls with the egg white.

Bake for 20-24 minutes, until rolls are golden brown on top and cooked through.

Allow to cool for 2 minutes in the casserole dish before attempting to remove.
