We love making our own little felt animal crafts, either to make into ornaments or give as sweet homemade gifts. Our newest creation is this fall-inspired Owl Sewing Craft with a free printable owl sewing pattern that’s easy enough for kids.

Felt Owl Sewing Craft

I finally gave in and bought my daughter a full-sized sewing machine, but up til now we’ve just been perfecting her sewing skills with simple, hand-stitched projects like this one.

Even if you plan to make the move to a sewing machine, it’s great for kids to have a good command of basic hand-sewing skills. These skills are great for fine motor development and for mending clothes as they get older, and definitely come in handy with more complicated sewing projects in the future.

I’ve also found that intricate art projects like this one have been great for building Ella’s ability to focus. Sewing projects require focus to be successful and the reward of a beautiful craft at the end is a great incentive.

You can just display the finished stuffed owl as-is, or turn it into an ornament with a loop of ribbon, turn it into a magnet or even add to a painted canvas for some 3D art.

Whenever we need to cut out intricate shapes from felt, I always grab some freezer paper and use the freezer paper trick to cut out our felt shapes, but good-quality felt and a sharp pair of scissors also makes all the difference.

If the eyes and dots of the owl are too difficult for your child to attach, you can use fabric puffy paint to add those details – or use tiny pom poms for the dots and googly eyes!

This DIY Owl Stuffie is a great sewing project for kids, no matter their level of sewing ability. I’ve provided a free printable template for you to cut the pattern out from, and then you just need to know how to do a basic whip stitch and cross stitch. (A cross stitch is pretty easy to fake.) This craft allows kids to practice those simple stitches, but is pretty quick and not too labor-intensive.

How to Make a Felt Owl Stuffie Craft

Select 3 different colored felt fabrics for the owl pattern. You will also need black and white felt for the eyes and orange felt for the beak.

Trace the patterns on the selected felt fabrics and cut them out nicely.

Take the eye cutouts (1 small black round felt and 1 relatively big white round felt) and stitch the black piece on the top of the white piece by stitching a small white dot pattern. Stitch the other eye in the same way.

Place the eyes on the top side of the owl body base and stitch the white piece with the base piece.

Stitch around the side of the white felt of the eyes to join them with the owl base piece. Stitch the orange triangle (beak) on the bottom middle part of the eyes.

Grab the half circle piece and stitch it with the base along the bottom side of it. Align the straight ends of both pieces nicely before stitching.

Grab any one of the semi-circular pieces (wings) and stitch it with the base on both sides.

Make sure to keep the curved edge of the wing patterns towards the inner side of the base. Place the plain body base on the back side of the stitched body base. Prepare needle and thread to stitch the both bases together.

Keep a small opening for stuffing the felt owl. Use cotton or scrap felt to stuff the owl plush.

Once you are done stuffing the owl plush, you can close the small opening to secure the stuffing. Tie a knot and cut off extra thread when done.
