A delicious copycat version of one of our favorite Disneyland treats, this Refreshing Mint Julep Lemonade is the perfect way to bring a bit of the parks home – whether you’re enjoying them for a Disney movie night or as a way to beat the summer heat.

Disneyland Mint Juleps Recipe

We usually head to the parks at least twice a year and with our border still being closed a year into the pandemic… I am going through some serious Disney withdrawals.

While I can’t magically transport myself there to feel the hot Florida sun as we laze about on the green crowd-watching while having our standard first Disney meal of corn dog nuggets and fries – I can bring a bit of the parks home with this super simple, spot-on Disney Mint Julep recipe!

Disney’s (virgin) Mint Juleps were originally only available at Disneyland in New Orleans Square (and are one of our Top 12 Disneyland Eats) but on our last DisneyWorld trip, they had just debuted at Casey’s Corner in Magic Kingdom – and since then they’ve introduced a frozen slushie version, too, that I can’t wait to try for myself!

The flavor is like a mint lemonade with a gentle hint of lime – sweet, tart, satisfying and so refreshing. This recipe makes a full pitcher, so you can offer unlimited refills, just like they do at Blue Bayou. For the full Blue Bayou experience, try serving these mint juleps alongside our Easy Beignets recipe or our Monte Cristo Sliders.

Do I need creme de menthe syrup to make Disney mint juleps? While the official Disneyland recipe calls for a creme de menthe syrup, I could not find it locally and the cost of ordering online was too hefty for me – especially considering I only needed a couple teaspoons.

Instead, I made a quick mint simple syrup by boiling equal parts water and sugar (1 cup each), then simmering until it had a thick, syrup-like consistency. I removed it from the heat and added a couple teaspoons mint extract, to taste. You could alternatively just use mint extract, since this recipe is already pretty sweet.

(Also, I think Disney has changed their recipe, since it used to be bright green and now just looks like lemonade – so they may not even use the creme de menthe syrup anymore, either.)

Do Disney mint juleps contain alcohol? The mint juleps you can buy at Blue Bayou, Cafe Orleans or Mint Julep Bar in Disneyland (as well as Casey’s in Magic Kingdom) are all virgin, non-alcoholic mint juleps. However, at the members-only Club 33 at Disneyland, you can get a Mint Julep spiked with bourbon.

Can I use fresh mint to make Disney mint juleps? Yes, you can muddle 3-5 fresh mint leaves in each glass before adding in the mint-free lemon-lime drink mix. You can either leave them in the drink or strain them out before serving. This method will result in a slightly different flavor profile than using the mint simple syrup outlined below.

Bring to a boil, then reduce and simmer for 5 minutes.

Remove the limeade mixture from the heat and allow to cool. After a few minutes, you can pour into a heat-proof mason jar and refrigerate to speed up the cooling process.

Once the limeade mixture is completely chilled, add the mint extract.

Place the mint-lime mixture in a large drink pitcher and pour in the lemonade. Stir well to combine.

Fill your serving glasses with ice and pour in the mint julep.
