Instant Pot Blueberry Oatmeal Recipe
Longtime readers know that I am not a breakfast person.
I don’t even want to think about food until lunch time – give me coffee in the morning and I’m happy. But my daughter still expects me to make her breakfast every day for some reason, so I try to figure out easy, quick breakfast options that she will enjoy and I don’t have to spend too much time on.
The best thing about this Instant Pot oatmeal is that it’s pretty hands off. No watching the stove top, stirring, worrying about timing things perfectly or keeping the oatmeal warm after it’s done cooking. Just measure the ingredients into the Instant Pot and after it’s done cooking, the Instant Pot keeps it nice and warm until you’re ready to serve.
Now, just a note – my daughter likes her oatmeal thick. I’ve included information about how to make this oatmeal creamier in the recipe card below but if you like your oatmeal sticky, thick and chewy – this is the recipe for you! (I personally like it somewhere in the middle and just mash some milk into the oatmeal after cooking to achieve a creamier texture.)
This recipe uses the “pot in pot” method to avoid getting a burn notice on the Instant Pot. When I make my Instant Pot Peaches and Cream Quinoa I cook it right in the main pot so I think that same method would work well for this oatmeal, but I haven’t tried it yet and I like of like that the oatmeal is perfectly cooked in a serving bowl – less dishes are always a win!
You can alternatively place individual mason jars on the trivet in your Instant Pot and make smaller, grab-and-go oatmeals using this method.
Oats are high in soluble fibre, naturally gluten-free, and high in manganese, iron, selenium, zinc and vitamin B1. They are great for regulating blood sugar and helping you feel fuller longer.
This recipe uses rolled oats but you can swap in instant oats with no adjustments. If you’d prefer to use steel-cut oats, increase the liquid ratio from 2:1 to 3:1 and increase the cook time to 8 minutes. All three types of oats offer the same nutritional benefits.
Swap out the blueberries for your favorite fruit or oatmeal mix-ins. I personally love a bit of maple sugar or maple syrup and cinnamon in my oatmeal. Ella also loves strawberries or chopped up apples and cinnamon mixed into her oatmeal.

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup Blueberries
- 1 1/2 cups Rolled Oats
- 2 teaspoons Cinnamon
- 3 cups Water
- 2 teaspoons Brown Sugar, optional
Instructions
- Place 1 cup of water in the bottom of your Instant Pot.
- Place the trivet overtop. You will be placing your bowl with the oatmeal on top.
- In a medium-sized heatproof bowl that will fit in your Instant Pot, mix together the oats, cinnamon, blueberries and water. (If you are using any sugar or sweetener, mix it in now, too.)
- Secure the lid on your Instant Pot and select Manual for 4 minutes.
- Natural release for at least 10 minutes to allow the oatmeal to finish cooking.
- Stir up the oatmeal and add in milk, if desired.
Notes
You can increase the amount of oatmeal as long as you keep the 2:1 dry to liquid ratio. You will not need to adjust the cooking time.
If using steel cut oats, increase the liquid ratio to 3:1 and the cooking time to 8 minutes.
To make a creamier oatmeal, add in 1/2 cup of milk to the liquid. It will need to be stirred in after cooking - it will likely be sitting on top of the oatmeal when you open the Instant Pot. Alternatively, you can add this after cooking.
