Blueberry Lemonade Recipe

Is there anything better than a cold glass of lemonade on a hot summer day?

This thirst-quenching blueberry lemonade is tart and vibrant with just the right amount of natural sweetness. It’s the perfect drink after running around with the kids in the backyard, or for serving to guests at a backyard BBQ or summer party. It’s so refreshing and delicious and makes any occasion feel just a bit more special.

Store-bought lemonade can seem like an innocent drink offering in the summer, but after checking out the nutritional information for our favorite brand of lemonade, I was shocked to find out that an 8oz glass contained 40g of sugar! In comparison, an 8oz glass of Coca-Cola only has 27g of sugar. Crazy, right? Who would have thought that offering your child a glass of lemonade would be almost twice as much sugar as offering them a can of coke?!

This homemade blueberry lemonade has 11g of sugar for the same portion size – and you can reduce it further by reducing the amount of maple syrup you add, if desired. Plus, it’s all natural sugars from the fruit and maple syrup which also comes with all of the vitamins and minerals of those ingredients.

There are some other blueberry lemonade recipes I’ve seen that use a blueberry puree to make the lemonade, but I personally hate pulp of any kind in my drinks and I think the kids would not be a fan of that gritty texture. (Even if strained with a fine mesh sieve, a puree will still add some “texture” to your lemonade. No, thank you.)

Instead, I boiled blueberries to make a homemade blueberry juice (or blueberry syrup) and strained out the blueberries. The strained blueberries can then be used smoothies, added to baked goods like blueberry pie or blended into a homemade applesauce.

I think adding the squeezed lemon to the bottom of your serving glass is a pretty touch – and easier than adding lemon slices. It adds some visual interest and lets you get away with using less ice in your drinks. Of course, I had to take this blueberry lemonade over the top and I basically added a whole fruit bowl to each of our glasses!

Wedges of watermelon, slices of grapefruit, cherries and extra blueberries make this simple blueberry lemonade into an instagram-worthy party drink that kids and adults alike will be excited about. Plus, it doubles as a snack. (You can swap out the fruit that we used for whichever fruits you prefer.)

You get about 1 cup of blueberry juice from the recipe below (you can double or triple as needed), which will make about 16 servings of blueberry lemonade. I keep the blueberry juice in a mason jar in the fridge and just grab a tablespoon every time we want to make a fresh cup – but you can pre-mix a full pitcher and keep in the fridge (if you have the room – which we never do).

To make a pitcher of this blueberry lemonade, combine the 1 cup of blueberry juice with 3 cups lemon juice and 16 cups of water. You can add up to one cup of maple syrup, to taste.

To make a sparkling blueberry lemonade, swap out the plain water called for in the recipe with club soda or a plain sparkling water.

You can also make this blueberry lemonade into a blueberry lemonade cocktail by adding your favorite liquor to it: rum, vodka, amaretto, tequila – they’d all work perfectly.

You can also use this method of making a natural fruit lemonade to make cherry lemonade, strawberry lemonade, blackberry lemonade, raspberry lemonade, rhubarb lemonade – or even floral-infused lemonades!
