Acorn Squash Fries Recipe

Acorn Squash Fries are a tender, flavorful fall side dish that is naturally vegan, keto, paleo and gluten-free.

The perfectly cooked acorn squash is sweet and creamy with charred, crispy bits and a flavorful yet approachable blend of seasonings (we used garlic powder, paprika, thyme, salt and pepper – but you can swap these out for your favorite fry seasonings).

Acorn Squash Fries are an easy fall side dish and a fun alternative to more time-intensive fry options like sweet potato fries.

Serve with your favorite sweet potato fry condiments.

You can use different types of squash to make this recipe, such as butternut squash, but I think the acorn squash is a tamer flavor profile for kids to try.

Acorn Squash Fries Variations:

  • Make these sweet with maple syrup, cinnamon or brown sugar instead of using savoury seasonings
  • Add up to 1 cup of breadcrumbs to the spice mixture for even crispier fries
  • For a cheesy flavor, add Parmesan cheese or nutritional yeast
  • Omit the seasonings other than salt and pepper to make them even more picky-eater-friendly

Acorn Squash Fries FAQs

Tips to Make the Best Acorn Squash Fries:

  • The thinner you cut the acorn squash, the crispier the acorn fries will turn out.
  • Space the acorn fries out well on the baking sheet (overcrowding them will make them soggier)
  • For crispier fries, you can leave the cut acorn squash out for an hour or two to dry them out
  • Add a Tablespoon of cornstarch to the spice mixture before sprinkling on the acorn squash for even crispier fries

Are acorn squash fries healthier than sweet potato fries? I don’t ever like to make claims about health, but squash fries contain less calories, carbs and sugar compared to sweet potato fries.
