This is a great, low-prep and no-fuss recipe to make with the kids in anticipation of a Halloween party or movie night. We made these Halloween cookies together just before dinner and they were set-up and ready for us after dinner, just in time for us to watch Hotel Transylvania for the 100th time.

I’ve included some recipe variations below and answers to any questions I think might come up while making this recipe – but if you have a question I didn’t cover here, please pop it in the comments and I’ll get right back to you!

Halloween Nutter Butter Variations:

  • Use green candy melts and pipe on a stitched mouth for Frankenstein cookies (or just do green with candy eyes for Blobby from Hotel Transylvania).
  • Use orange candy melts instead of black for pumpkin-inspired Nutter Butters.
  • Add a drizzle of red candy melts for a “vampire bite” look.
  • Use OREOs or another favorite cookie to swap out the Nutter Butters, if desired.
  • Use melted white and milk chocolate instead of candy melts, if desired.

Do I need to temper the candy melts? No, candy melts are designed to be easy to use and don’t require tempering like chocolate. Just melt, dip and set.

How do I keep the candy coating smooth? Stir well between heating intervals and avoid overheating, which can cause clumping.

Can I make these ahead of time? Yes, they keep well in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.

What if I can’t find candy eyes? You can make eyes using mini chocolate chips or pipe them with white and black icing.

How do I prevent sticking when setting the cookies? Place them on parchment or wax paper until the coating hardens completely.

How to Make Nutter Butter Ghosts

Line a baking sheet or cutting board with parchment paper. Set aside.

For the Ghost Nutter Butters: Place the white candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl and heat for 30 seconds, stir well, and reheat as needed until smooth and melted.

Dip a Nutter Butter cookie halfway into the white candy melts, and then use a spoon to create a drippy effect, if desired. (You can also submerge the Nutter Butter fully, however that does make it harder to convey that they are ghosts.)

Place the candy-coated Nutter Butter on the parchment paper and place two candy eyes towards the top of the candy-coated end.

Repeat with 6 Nutter Butters.

For the Bat Nutter Butters: Place the black candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl and heat for 30 seconds, stir well, and reheat as needed until smooth and melted.

Dip one (flat) side of a Nutter Butter into the black candy melts.

Place the candy-coated Nutter Butter on the parchment paper and place two candy eyes in the centre of the cookie, and then place 2 black sprinkles or 2 small pieces of liquorice ropes just above.

Repeat with remaining 6 Nutter Butters.

Allow candy melts to set completely before storing or serving.
