I’ve made lots of guacamole recipes over the years, and this is the recipe I keep coming back to again and again. It’s simple, balanced and fresh, better than anything you can get at the grocery store – and best of all, it comes together in minutes!
This homemade guacamole relies on fresh produce for it’s flavor, with a creamy avocado base, the perfect amount of zesty acidity from lime juice, just the right amount of zippy red onion, gently spicy jalapeños and a clean herbal finish from cilantro.
You can make it super smooth or leave in some chunks for a rustic finish, and if you prefer your guacamole with more heat you can leave in some jalapeño seeds or hit it up with some spices.
This recipes makes a lot of guacamole, so you can enjoy it as both a dip (with tortillas or veggies) and also serve as a topping with tacos, salads, rice bowls, etc.
Our easy homemade guacamole recipe combines ripe avocados, fresh lime juice, jalapeño and cilantro for a creamy, flavorful dip ready in minutes. Perfect for tacos, chips and party spreads, this authentic-style guacamole is simple, fresh and customizable.

Snackable History Fact: Guacamole has roots in Aztec cuisine, where mashed avocados were combined with salt and sometimes tomatoes or chiles. The name comes from the Nahuatl word “āhuacamōlli,” meaning avocado sauce. Over time, it evolved across regions of Mexico, with local variations influencing texture and additions like onion, lime and herbs.

How to Make Homemade Guacamole
Cut avocados in half with a sharp knife, then use the edge of the knife to remove the avocado pit. I like to hit the pit hard with the knife edge, twist and remove the pit, but there are safer ways to remove it.

Use a spoon to scoop out the avocado flesh and place in a medium-sized bowl.

Mash the avocados together well and sprinkle with 2 Tablespoons of lime juice. Mash to combine.
Add the diced red onions, diced jalapenos and minced garlic. Stir well, then add cilantro.
Taste and adjust with salt and additional lime juice.

Easy Guacamole Recipe Variations:
- Add finely diced Roma tomato or other favorite veggie additions.
- Swap red onion for white onion for a sharper, more traditional flavor.
- Stir in a pinch of ground cumin for earthy depth.
- Fold in diced mango or pineapple for a sweet contrast that pairs well with spicy dishes.
- Use serrano pepper instead of jalapeño for a cleaner, brighter heat.

Tips for the Perfect Homemade Guacamole
- Use avocados that are ripe but not mushy. Overripe fruit leads to a dull, overly soft texture.
- Dice onion finely to avoid overpowering bites and harshness.
- Remove jalapeño seeds and membranes for milder heat, or keep some for more intensity.
- Rinse cilantro well and dry it before chopping to avoid watering down the mixture.
- Add lime juice in stages and taste as you go to maintain balance without excess acidity.
