Texas Roadhouse Rolls Recipe
Y’all, this has been the month of copycat recipes over here at Sugar, Spice and Glitter.
We’ve been missing so many favorite restaurant dishes with not being able to travel for nearly a year, that the only logical thing to do was to spend hours upon hours in the kitchen trying to come up with near-perfect versions of our most missed treats.
Naturally, Texas Roadhouse Rolls with that amazing, eat-it-by-the-poundful Cinnamon Honey Butter was high up on everyone’s list when we were brainstorming ideas. It took some experimenting, especially with the unique shape of the rolls due to a very specific rolling and folding process, but I think we’ve nailed this copycat Texas Roadhouse Rolls recipe!
The result is a dense yet fluffy dinner roll with a golden, chewy exterior and soft interior. And when topped with that luscious, sweet cinnamon honey butter, they are sheer perfection. Just like with the restaurant version, we found ourselves slathering roll after roll in the butter and scarfing them down until the whole basket had disappeared.
I’ve also experimented with adding fun mix-ins like chocolate chips and blueberries and they turned out amazing. The blueberry roadhouse rolls are the perfect option for brunch – and just give me another reason to whip up that super simple 4-ingredient cinnamon honey butter.

My best tip to ensure that these rolls turn out perfectly every time is to use a thermometer to check the temperature of the warm milk mixture before adding it to the yeast mixture. I never used to do this and would get so frustrated when my dough wouldn’t rise. I’d assume that the yeast was old – but what was actually happening was that I was killing the yeast by adding a liquid that was too hot.
You can use a candy thermometer or meat thermometer for this. Ensure the mixture is between 95ºF and 110ºF – if it’s hotter, allow it to cool before proceeding with the recipe. This is the meat thermometer I have been using for the past 6 years – I’ve never had to change a battery and it’s super sturdy and reliable. It was a bit pricey, but unlike the $15 models that you can buy, this one isn’t going to need replacement. It is waterproof and comes with a two-year warranty. (Thermoworks also has a $15 pocket-sized model if you want to try that out first before investing in the MK4.)
Can you freeze these Texas Roadhouse Rolls? Yes! Wrap and place in an airtight ziptop bag and freeze for up to two months. Beyond that, you may experience a texture difference.
You can also freeze the unbaked rolls before the second rise. Allow them to come to room temperature and then rise for 1 hour before proceeding with baking, as directed. If freezing before baking, I really love these Pyrex dishes with lids (and I add an extra layer of plastic wrap or parchment paper before securing the lid).
Can I reduce the sugar called for in this recipe? This recipe works out to less than 1 teaspoon of sugar per dinner roll, as written. The sugar is necessary to help the yeast ferment, which allows the dinner rolls to rise. However, I have had success replacing half of the sugar in this recipe with honey.

Kitchen Tools You May Find Helpful
- Stand Mixer fitted with hook attachment
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Microwave-proof dish <– I used my Pyrex measuring cup
- Dough cutter
- 9″ x 13″ Casserole Dish
- Pastry brush <– I like these because they are one solid piece and don’t have removable heads for bacteria to get trapped underneath. Plus they are heat-resistant and have a lifetime warranty.
- Instant Read Thermometer <– essential to avoid killing the yeast with liquid that is too hot

How to Make Texas Roadhouse Rolls
In the bowl of your stand mixer, combine the yeast, warm water and 1 teaspoon white sugar. Let proof for 5 minutes, until foamy.
Heat your milk in the microwave in 25 second increments until an inserted thermometer reads between 95F and 110F.

Set the mixer to low and add the warm milk, remaining sugar and 2 Tablespoons of the melted butter to the yeast mixture. Combine fully.
Add in the egg and continue stirring until fully incorporated.
Add 2 cups of the flour and the salt. Combine fully, then continue adding flour by half cups until you have added 3 1/2 cups of flour.
Knead the dough for 6-8 minutes until a soft ball forms and the dough pulls clean away from the sides of the bowl. Add up to 1 cup more flour, as needed to help the dough form.

Remove the dough from the bowl and place in a clean, greased bowl.
Cover with plastic wrap and a clean kitchen towel and allow to rise for 1 hour, until tripled in size.
Grease two 9″ x 13″ casserole dishes and set aside.
Punch down the risen dough and divide into 6 equal pieces.

Roll out each piece of dough into a strip, and then cut into four pieces.
Roll each piece to 1/2″ thickness and then fold back onto itself to form the classic roadhouse shape.
Place each folded roll in your prepared casserole dishes.
Once all rolls are rolled and folded, cover the casserole dishes with plastic wrap and kitchen towels and allow to rise a second time, about 1 hour.
Preheat oven to 350F.

Remove plastic wrap and towels and bake the rolls for 20-22 minutes, until golden brown and puffed up.
At the fifteen minute mark, brush the rolls with the melted butter.
Serve warm rolls with fresh cinnamon honey butter.

For the Cinnamon Honey Butter:
Combine all ingredients in a medium-sized bowl and beat together until smooth.

Scoop the butter mixture into a serving dish and serve alongside roadhouse rolls.
Any remaining butter should be stored in the fridge until ready to enjoy again.
