Burger Whoopie Pies Recipe
It’s been 7 years since we shared our No-Bake Burger Cookies, and 10 years we first shared our Burger Cupcakes, so it’s about time that we shared an update of the Burger Dessert concept with today’s Burger Whoopie Pies.
Similar to our burger cupcakes, these burgers feature vanilla cupcakes as buns but instead of using a brownie for the burger pattie, today we’re using a cocoa crispy and chocolate frosting base for the burger before loading it up with different frostings for the lettuce, mustard and ketchup.
I love finding that sweet spot between creative desserts that pay homage to a fun concept while also being delectable on their own, and these burger whoopie pies definitely hit that sweet spot.
With these burger whoopie pies, you get soft and sweet vanilla cupcake buns surrounding a crunchy, sweet and crispy burger pattie smothered with sweet vanilla frosting styled to look like mustard, ketchup and lettuce. (If desired, you can swap out the frosting lettuce for sweet, shredded coconut – and be sure to check out our suggested variations below for even more ideas.)
Older kids can make these burger whoopie pies independently, while younger kids can help measuring ingredients for the cupcake batter, shape the krispy patties and add the frosting “condiments.” It’s such a fun family-friendly baking activity, especially at a BBQ party.
Fun Variations on these Burger Cupcakes:
- Brownie Pattie: Check out our original burger cupcakes that feature a brownie instead of a the cocoa crispy burger pattie
- Slider Burger Cupcakes: Make these as mini cupcakes and use smaller krispy patties to match. Great for parties or as sampler treats. (Bonus tip: Use piping tips to get finer detail on the frosting “condiments.”)
- Cheesburger Cupcakes: Add a thin square of yellow fondant or white chocolate dyed yellow to look like a slice of melted cheese. Layer it between the krispy patty and top bun for an extra realistic—and delicious—touch.
- Fruity Burger Twist: Instead of red/yellow frosting, use strawberry jam for ketchup and lemon curd for mustard. Adds a tangy flavor twist and natural color! (Bonus tip: dye shredded coconut green to use as the lettuce.)
- Hot Dog Whoopie Pies: use a twinkie pan to make the yellow cake, slice halfway through and then pipe the chocolate frosting to suggest a hot dog shape.
- Cocoa Krispy Marshmallow Patties: next time I make these whoopie pies I want to experiment with making “patties” with melted marshmallows and butter, similar to a rice krispie treat.
How to prep these burger whoopie pies ahead of your event: Bake and cool the cupcakes a day ahead. Prep the cocoa krispy patties and store them in an airtight container.
Assemble the cupcakes the day you serve for best freshnessThey’ll hold up well for 1–2 days once assembled if stored in a cool place.
How to store leftover burger whoopie pies: Keep them in an airtight container at room temperature for 1–2 days, or refrigerate up to a week. Let them come to room temp before serving for the best taste and texture.

How to Make Burger Whoopie Pies
Whoopie Pie Directions:
Preheat oven to 350F. Grease a whoopie pie pan and set aside.
Using a large bowl, beat the cake mix, eggs, butter and milk until combined and smooth. (Alternatively, use the ingredients called for on the cake mix box.)
Spoon about 2 Tablespoons of cake batter into the whoopie pie pans and bake 10-12 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Before the whoopie pies cool, sprinkle the sesame seeds overtop to allow them to set from the heat.
Remove from the whoopie pan and set on a cooling rack.
Once cool, slice the whoopie pies in half through the middle.
Chocolate Frosting Directions:
In a large bowl, beat the butter, powdered sugar and cocoa powder for 2 minutes. Once combined, slowly incorporate the heavy cream until smooth and the frosting holds soft peaks.
Scoop the chocolate frosting into a large piping bag fitting with a star tip.
Pipe the frosting onto the bottom half of each whoopie pie. (Adding more frosting to the piping bag, as needed.)
For the Cocoa Krispy Burger Patties:
Mix the cocoa krispy cereal with the remaining frosting.
Form the cocoa krispy-frosting mixture into “patties” approximately the same size as the whoopie pies and place one pattie on each frosted whoopie pie bottom.
For the Burger Condiments:
Put the yellow frosting into another piping bag and cut the tip off.
Squeeze and smooth the yellow frosting onto the “burger pattie.”
Place the red frosting into another piping bag and cut the tip off and pipe a thick ring of red frosting around to create the ketchup.
Place the green frosting into the piping bag fitted with a leaf tip Pipe leafs all over the top of the ‘ketchup’ to create a lettuce look.
Carefully place the top whoopie pie on top and gently press down.
