Pizza Wontons Recipe

These pizza wontons are quickly becoming one of my favorite options for an afterschool snack, game day appetizer or just a fun movie night treat.

They are super quick and easy to make – the kids can even make them independently (little ones might need some help sealing the edges) – and are completely customizable to your personal pizza preferences, unlike frozen versions that tend to come in only one or two flavors.

If you’ve never purchased wonton wrappers, they are usually found in the produce department of most grocery stores, or they can be ordered online.

Pizza Wonton Variations:

  • Different Fillings: Of course, you should make these pizza wontons based on your personal preferences – so swap out the pepperoni, cheese and pizza sauce called for in this recipe for your own favorite pizza toppings, if desired.
  • Breadcrumb Coating: Add a crunchy breadcrumb coating by dipping the filled but uncooked wontons in a beaten egg and then rolling in Italian-style breadcrumbs, and then proceeding with the recipe as written.
  • Pizza Wonton Cups: If shaping the wontons is too tricky, use silicone baking cups and line them with the wonton wrappers before filling the “cup” with the fillings.
  • Pizza Egg Rolls: If you accidentally purchase the larger wonton wrappers (or if that’s all that your store has on hand), you can either make larger wontons or pizza egg rolls (one of our most popular recipes).

How to Make Pizza Wontons in the Oven: Set oven to bake at 400F, place the wontons on a well-greased or lined baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes

How to Fry Pizza Wontons: In a traditional fryer or a heavy pan, heat your oil to 300F. Fry wontons for 3 minutes, only cooking 3-4 wontons at a time.

How to store leftover wontons: Leftover wontons can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week, however they won’t be as crispy after refrigeration.

Can homemade pizza wontons be frozen? Yes! Store the air-fried (or baked) pizza wontons in airtight, ziptop freezer bags and enjoy within a month.

Tip: Be sure to spread out the wontons with at least an inch of space in between them so that they don’t overcrowd. Crowding the pizza wontons will prevent them from getting crispy.

  • Measuring Cups and Spoons
  • Pastry brush <– I like these because they are one solid piece and don’t have removable heads for bacteria to get trapped underneath. Plus they are heat-resistant and have a lifetime warranty
