Lemon Pepper Chicken Wings Recipe

Take-out chicken wings are one of my few weaknesses.

It started a couple years ago when a Korean fried chicken restaurant opened in my city with one of my FAVOURITE Korean dishes – tteokbokki (a saucy rice cake dish). I started going there almost weekly and inevitably started adding a box of chicken wings to my order.

Now, I’m hooked… but in the interest of saving some money and avoiding the excess calories and fat from deep-fried chicken wings, I’m trying to satisfy that craving by making restaurant-worthy “fried” chicken wings at home – with my air-fryer.

These lemon pepper chicken wings are juicy and tender with fall-off the bone meat and perfectly crispy and flavorful skin. We’re talking buttery and citrusy with just the right amount of peppery kick.

To take these wings over the top, sprinkle some freshly grated Parmesan cheese over your lemon pepper wings before serving.

While I tend to think of lemon pepper wings as just an party appetizer, making them in the air-fryer makes them a healthy and easy option for a weekday meal. Serve with a light salad or roasted veggies to round it out… or go for full indulgence and serve with french fries or tater tots.

Note: I typically toss our chicken wings in a bit of baking powder to make them extra-crispy, I didn’t do that for this recipe because I find the lemon pepper seasoning to be a bit salty already and I find that the baking powder enhances the salty taste. If you do want to add a tablespoon of baking powder to the flour mixture before coating the chicken wings, ensure that you are using a low-sodium lemon pepper seasoning to avoid these lemon pepper chicken wings from becoming too salty. (You can also try making your own lemon pepper seasoning using our homemade lemon pepper recipe.)

You can also use this method for preparing crispy lemon pepper chicken drumsticks or thighs, just adjust the cooking time accordingly (about 20-22 minutes, still ensuring that the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165F).

Or, you can use this method of making crispy air-fryer chicken wings to prepare a variety of other chicken wing flavours (buffalo chicken wings, honey garlic chicken wings, BBQ chicken wings, teriyaki chicken wings, etc).

How to store leftover lemon pepper chicken wings: leftover wings can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge and reheated for up to 5-6 days. Cooked wings can be frozen for up to 3 months in a ziptop freezer bag or freezer containers – but I personally have not tried this so I’m doubtful that the skin will remain as crispy, even if reheated in the air fryer.

If you’d prefer to bake your lemon pepper chicken wings, bake at 425F for about 45 minutes.
