Caramel Dutch Apple Pie Recipe

A fun twist on a Dutch Apple Pie, this caramel apple pie recipe came about completely by accident!

I was baking some Caramel Apple Crumb Cakes for Ella’s kindergarten bake sale and had way too much crumb topping leftover, and I was making quiche for the next day using a pre-made pie shell – so I thought, why not combine the two?

For the pie you see in these pictures, we actually used a combination of blackberries and apples, which was delicious – and just goes to prove that by having fun with classic recipes, you can come up with some pleasant surprises!

My advice for this pie is to use whatever you have on hand – pears and oranges? Raspberries and apples? Go right ahead and add them in. The combination of the buttery pie crust and sugary-crunchy crumb topping will help transform your slapped together pie into a gourmet delight!

Ingredients for Caramel Apple Pie

For the pie crust:

We used a pre-made pie crust, but if you want to make one from scratch:

For the apple filling:

For the crumb topping:

  • Cold Butter
  • White Granulated Sugar
  • All-purpose Flour
  • Cinnamon

Kitchen Tools You May Find Helpful

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Pie plates
  • Rolling pin
  • Mixing bowls
  • Sharp knife (For kids use apple crinkle cutters)
  • Wooden spoons <– I like these spatulas because they are one solid piece and don’t have removable heads for bacteria to get trapped underneath. Plus they are heat-resistant and have a lifetime warranty.
  • Pastry cutter, if available

How to Make a Lazy Dutch Apple Pie

Prepare your filling first, simply peel and chop the apples and then mix in the remaining ingredients in a large bowl.

Let the filling sit as you prepare the crust to let the flavours settle.

If making your crust from scratch, mix the crust ingredients together with a fork or your hands.

You still want the dough to crack easily, this will not be smooth like a play dough.

For the crumb topping, combine the sugar, flour, and cinnamon in a small bowl. Cut in the butter until the crumb coating is formed into small pea-sized pieces.

Preheat oven to 400F

Assemble the pie by rolling out the pie crust and pressing into a pie plate.

Prick the crust all over with a fork and then pour in the filling. Sprinkle with the crumb topping and bake for 40 minutes, covered with tinfoil, then remove tinfoil and cook for an additional 10-20 minutes.

When the pie is cooled, place the caramels and cream in a microwave-safe dish and microwave for 30 seconds, stir well, and reheat as needed.

Drizzle the soft caramel over the pie and let set before serving or packaging.
