Strawberry Glazed Donut Recipe

Does your family have special weekly traditions?

One of our favorite family traditions is Donuts and Dance Party Saturdays. It’s exactly what it sounds like, we enjoy donuts and coffee (usually in my bed) and then work it all off with a Saturday morning dance party.

Often, I take it easy and just grab a pack of those mini powdered sugar donuts from the grocery store, but every once in a while I decide to whip up some homemade donuts for our Saturday morning tradition.

These strawberry glazed donuts were a welcome addition. The soft, vanilla cake donut has the perfect dense-but-not-too-heavy texture, giving these donuts a great chew. And that homemade strawberry glaze? So delicious with a vibrant real strawberry flavor and it just melts-in-your-mouth. Seriously, I enjoyed these homemade donuts way more than any strawberry glazed donut I’ve ever had from a donut shop.

These pretty strawberry donuts would be perfect for so many different occasions, such as:

  • Valentine’s Day
  • Mother’s Day
  • a Princess Birthday Party
  • a Baby Shower
  • a Bridal Shower

But to be honest – I can’t think of any occasion that I wouldn’t be happy to see these delicious donuts pop up at!

While I made our cake donuts from scratch, the real hero here is that strawberry glaze! Feel free to swap out the homemade donut recipe for cake mix donuts.

Should I refrigerate glazed donuts? If you will realistically eat the whole batch within 2-3 days, you can keep the donuts out at room temperature. However, if your home runs warmer, this could cause the glaze to melt.

What is strawberry glaze made out of? Our homemade strawberry donut glaze is made out of fresh strawberries, powdered icing sugar (sometimes called confectioner’s sugar), cream or milk, and a bit of pink food coloring to really bring out a vibrant pink color. The food coloring is completely optional.

How do I refresh a glazed donut? If your last couple donuts have gotten stale before you’ve been able to enjoy them, you can refresh them slightly by placing in the microwave for 15 seconds before enjoying.

Kitchen Tools You May Find Helpful

  • Donut Pan <– while I made these with a metal donut pan, I really love my new silicone donut pans for easier removal after baking
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Measuring Cups and Spoon
  • Electric mixer <– this is a great hand mixer if you don’t want to make the investment into a stand mixer
  • Fine Mesh Strainer
  • High-powered blender <– this is the one I use, it’s pricey but a workhorse

How to Make Strawberry Glazed Donuts

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Spray your donut baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.

Place a cooling rack over a baking tray for when you cool and decorate your donuts. Set aside.

In a large bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Set aside.

In a small bowl, whisk together egg, milk, melted butter and vanilla extract.

Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir together until well combined. Do not overmix.

You can use a measuring cup or piping bag to portion the batter into your donut pan – whatever you fill most comfortable with. You need to fill each cavity about 3/4 of the way full as they will rise when baking.

Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until an inserted toothpick comes out clean and the donuts are springy and golden brown.

Allow the donuts to cool for 2 minutes before removing from the pan and placing on the prepared cooling rack.

To Make the Strawberry Glaze:

Puree the strawberries in a blender until smooth.

Place a fine mesh sieve above a bowl or measuring cup and pour the strawberries in. You can discard what the sieve catches or use it in another recipe.

Pour the strained strawberry puree into a small bowl and add confectioner’s sugar until you form a dippable icing. You may also need to add a bit of cream depending on the consistency of your strawberries.

The strawberries don’t add a lot of color to the icing, so I added some pink food dye to really amp up the color.

To Assemble the Donuts:

Dip each donut into the glaze, hold above the bowl to let the glaze drip off, and then re-dip to get a thick coating.

Place the dipped donut on the cooling rack and immediately sprinkle on your choice of sprinkles.

Repeat with all donuts. Let dry before packaging or serving.
