Double Chocolate Nutella Banana Bread Recipe

Every once in awhile, I go through a baking phase where everything I made centers around one theme or ingredient – and a little bit ago, I went through a Nutella phase.

One of our favorite recipes to come out of that was today’s Nutella Banana Bread, a deeply rich, double chocolate banana bread with a dense yet tender crumb. The natural sweetness of overripe bananas works perfectly with the cocoa-hazelnut flavors of Nutella, and while those mini chocolate chips are optional, the pops of pure chocolate flavor they bring to every slice is highly recommended.

This is an easy recipe for the kids to help make and can be served for a variety of occasions – parties, brunch, dessert, etc. I also think it would make a great gift for any Nutella fan!

Why You’ll Love This Nutella Banana Bread

  • Deep chocolate-hazelnut flavor paired with naturally sweet banana combines two childhood favorites in one decadent snack.
  • Simple, one-bowl recipe with minimal prep and everyday ingredients.
  • Versatile enough for breakfast, dessert, lunch box treats or gifting.

Snackable History Fact: Nutella was invented in 1946, when Italian pastry chef Pietro Ferrero created a chocolate-hazelnut paste called Pasta Gianduja to stretch scarce cocoa supplies after World War II. Hazelnuts were abundant in the Piedmont region and far cheaper than cocoa, making the spread an affordable alternative. The original version was a solid loaf wrapped in foil that could be sliced and spread on bread, until 1951 when he transformed it into a creamy, spreadable version called Supercrema.

In 1964, his son, Michele Ferraro, refined the recipe further and officially launched Nutella – the name combining “nut” with the Italian suffix “-ella” for a soft, friendly sound.

Recipe FAQs

How do I know my Nutella banana bread is fully baked?

A toothpick may not come out clean due to Nutella and chocolate chips. Look for a set center that springs back when lightly pressed and an internal temperature around 200F.

Can I make this into Nutella banana bread muffins?

Yes, portion the batter into two lined muffin tins and bake at 350°F for 18 to 22 minutes, checking early for doneness.

Can I freeze Nutella banana bread?

Yes, you can freeze the whole loaf or individually slices. Wrap slices individually and freeze for up to 2 months in an airtight, ziptop freezer bag. Thaw at room temperature before serving.

  • Loaf pan
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Wooden spoon or spatula – I like these spatulas because they are one solid piece and don’t have removable heads for bacteria to get trapped underneath. Plus they are heat-resistant and have a lifetime warranty.
  • Electric mixer <– this is a great hand mixer if you don’t want to make the investment into a stand mixer

Nutella Banana Bread Recipe Variations:

  • Cream cheese ribbon: Layer a lightly sweetened cream cheese mixture through the center for a cheesecake-like contrast. (Here’s a recipe for cream cheese filling from Wilton.)
  • Dark chocolate upgrade: Replace mini chips with chopped dark chocolate for less sweetness and more depth.
  • Toasted hazelnut crunch: Fold in 1/2 cup chopped toasted hazelnuts for texture and to emphasize the hazelnut note in Nutella’s flavor profile.
  • Espresso boost: Add 1 teaspoon instant espresso powder to intensify the chocolate notes (note: I always taste the coffee flavor when people do this but others claim they can’t).

Tips for the Perfect Nutella Banana Bread

  • Use very ripe bananas with heavy brown spotting for stronger flavor and natural sweetness.
  • Bring eggs and cream fully to room temperature to prevent the Nutella from seizing when mixed.
  • Sift or whisk the dry ingredients thoroughly before incorporating into the wet ingredients to evenly distribute the baking powder and salt.
  • Do not overmix once flour is added, as this can lead to a tougher crumb. A few flour streaks are better than overmixing.
  • You may want to pre-mash the bananas before incorporating to avoid banana lumps in the finished loaf.
