Spiked Hot Chocolate Recipe

Who says you have to choose between a cocktail or a comforting warm beverage in the winter?

Today’s spiked hot chocolate allows you to have the indulgence of both with just 4 ingredients (5 if we’re including the marshmallows). It’s creamy, rich and super chocolatey with a hint of vanilla.

The alcohols used do not overpower the cocktail but just add a subtle warmth that goes beyond what just a mug of hot cocoa would do on it’s own.

I used a crème brûlée torch to char the marshmallow garnish but you can use a barbecue lighter if you don’t own one. It was super easy to do and took less than a minute, and it really enhances the smell, taste and experience of this cocktail.

Spiked Hot Chocolate Cocktail FAQs

We used whipped vanilla vodka and chocolate liqueur to make this cocktail, as some other alcohols can curdle milk (and we use milk to ensure our hot chocolate cocktail stays creamy).

Alcohols that will curdle milk include brandy, rum, or high-proof alcohols.

Whiskeys and vodkas are generally safe to add to milk-based cocktails, as are obviously milky liqueurs like Bailey’s and Kahlua.

For a flavour twist on this easy Hot Chocolate Cocktail recipe:

  • Spiked Peppermint Hot Chocolate: use peppermint vodka or peppermint schnapps
  • Spiked Terry’s Hot Chocolate: use cointreau for an orange-chocolate flavour similar to the classic Terry’s chocolate orange
  • Spiked Hazelnut Hot Chocolate: use Frangelico (a hazelnut liqueur) for a nutty flavour
  • Spiked Cinnamon Hot Chocolate: use a cinnamon whiskey to add some warming spice to your hot chocolate cocktail

Tip: be sure to add the alcohol to the hot chocolate, and not the other way around to prevent curdling.
