Onion Soup Mix Recipe

Onion Soup Mix has been a staple in my kitchen for years.

I use it in everything from quick onion chip dips to my favorite Mississippi Pot Roast, and yes, making homemade onion soup whenever the craving strikes.

However, not only are buying all those individual packets kind of pricey, they also come with a ton of added sodium, thickeners and flavor preservatives that have been associated with a host of health concerns.

I’m not about to give up my monthly indulgence in a bowl of onion chip dip, so the only reasonable solution for me was to spend some time figuring out a homemade solution that not only avoids the excess sodium but also saves me money.

It’s taken a lot of trial and error, but I think this is the perfect blend. It is less salty than commercial packets but the flavor is amazing: the sharp acidity of onions and garlic, the earthiness of the parsley and celery seed, and a bit of sweetness and heat from the paprika and white pepper. Tumeric adds a bit of bitter earthiness and a host of health benefits. You may need to adjust the salt measurement at first and lessen it over time as your family adjusts to a more health-conscious sodium level.

The best cost savings with this recipe is to purchase your spices from a bulk store, or if that’s not an option, buy the large containers of the individual spices and herbs. Buying the little containers to make this seasoning would be crazy expensive (but ironically, still cheaper than using the seasoning packets).

This homemade onion soup mix is shelf-stable for up to a year, as long as you use fresh (dried) herbs and spices when you make it and store in a cool, dry spot in your kitchen.

This seasoning is gluten-free, paleo, low-carb and vegan and makes a great homemade gift.

What is onion soup mix? Our onion soup mix is made with a variety of common seasonings: dried onion, parsley, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, tumeric, salt, white pepper and celery seed. It is used to make homemade onion dip or a quick and flavorful onion soup.

Should I add bouillon powder? Some instant onion soup mixes have bouillon powder in them, but personally I skip it in my recipe and if I plan to use it to make onion soup, I just use beef broth instead of water. You can add in a tablet of reduced sodium beef bouillon to your version, if desired.
