Homemade Garlic and Herb Seasoning Recipe

My girl cannot get enough garlic in everything and she always begs to try out new snacks or seasoning blends when she sees GARLIC prominently displayed on the title.

We’ve found some really amazing seasonings this way, but the most frustrating is when we find something that we love… and then can’t buy it again! We tried Mrs Dash a couple of years ago when we were in Orlando and rented a condo to save money cooking our own meals.

My daughter loved the seasoning blend and I figured I would grab a bottle when we got home… only to find out that Mrs Dash isn’t sold anywhere near me.

So, what’s a mom to do? Well, since I love experimenting in the kitchen and have an unreasonable amount of herbs and spices at the ready, I decided to play around and see if I could come up with a decent copycat Mrs Dash recipe.

This homemade garlic and herb seasoning gives food a zesty flavor with a slight earthiness and a bit of gentle heat.

The best cost savings with this recipe is to purchase your spices from a bulk store, or if that’s not an option, buy the large containers of the individual spices and herbs. Buying the little containers to make this seasoning would be crazy expensive (but ironically, still cheaper than using the seasoning packets).

This Copycat Mrs Dash seasoning is shelf-stable for up to a year, as long as you use fresh (dried) herbs and spices when you make it and store in a cool, dry spot in your kitchen.

This seasoning is gluten-free, paleo, low-carb and vegan and makes a great homemade gift.

What is Mrs Dash? Mrs Dash is a line of salt-free seasoning blends that has was rebranded to just “Dash” in Spring 2020 (but most of us still add the missus). The most popular are the original blend and garlic and herb blend.

What is in Mrs Dash Garlic and Herb seasoning? The actual recipe is a trade secret, but we do know that it contains over 20 ingredients (including Garlic, Onion, Black Pepper, Parsley, Fennel, Basil, Bay, Marjoram, Oregano, Savory, Thyme, Cayenne Pepper, Coriander, Cumin, Mustard, Rosemary, Celery Seed, Carrot and Orange Peel).

While I wanted a copycat option, I tried to just prioritize those seasonings that make a real impact on the final flavor. Of course, you can omit any herbs or spices that you’d like and this seasoning blend will turn out fine if you skip a couple (as long you don’t skip the garlic powder).

I totally agree – we’ve really reduced how much sodium we intake daily by thinking critically about our ingredients and the amount of pre-made foods we purchase, so now we can enjoy a sprinkle of salt when a recipe calls for it. As a result, overly salted seasoning mixes don’t do it for me anymore. I want REAL flavor – not just a sodium hit. I hope you love this recipe if you get a chance to make it.
