Unlike our previous rainbow salsa recipe, today’s Rainbow Fruit Salsa recipe is a dessert salsa! Sweet, colorful and served with homemade cinnamon tortilla chips, this is a bright and fresh option for summer barbecues or go-togethers.

A delicious dessert salsa made with fresh fruit and served with homemade cinnamon tortilla chips. An indulgent yet healthy dessert option at only 128cal and 9g of sugar per serving!

Fruit Salsa Recipe with Cinnamon Tortilla Chips

I have a bit of a penchant for taking a standard recipe and deciding it needs to be rainbow-inspired!

Pretty, rainbow-inspired food just tastes better!

Unlike our previous fruit salsas (our spicy strawberry salsa or blueberry jalapeño salsa), today’s salsa recipe has no spicy ingredients. It’s sweet, juicy and fresh, with the medley of colorful fruits creating a vibrant and flavorful experience.

It’s perfect for serving with our homemade cinnamon chips (directions below), but you can also serve it in so many different ways:

  • served on top of a cake or individual cupcakes
  • spooned over ice cream
  • on a no-bake cheesecake
  • layered into a parfait
  • scooped onto a marshmallowy pavlova

You could even pair it with savory items – it would be delicious on a homemade cheeseboard, or served on top of salmon or chicken.

Is this dessert salsa healthy? While this recipe does contain a very small amount of brown sugar, you still get all of the health benefits of the fruit in the recipe, including much-needed vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre.

Can I skip the brown sugar called for in this recipe? If you’d like to skip the brown sugar, you can use a brown sugar substitute like monkfruit sweetener, Splenda brown sugar, date sugar, or just go for honey or maple syrup.

Can I make this recipe spicy? While I kept this recipe on the sweet side, you can instead decide to go the spicy route and dress the fruit with cilantro, jalapeños, red onion, salt and lemon or lime juice.

Do I need to use the same fruits you used? Absolutely not! In fact, I would encourage you to pick fruit based on what’s freshest and most in-season when you are making this dessert salsa. In-season fruit is going to be sweeter and more delicious, and require less sugar.

I love serving this recipe for parties because it still feels indulgent and has all of the sweetness of a more sugary recipe, but is a great option for guests who are trying to avoid traditional desserts. I calculated one serving to be 1/3 cup of the salsa and one pita’s worth of chips (you’ll probably eat way less than that but I wanted to overestimate) and it only came out to 128 calories and 9g of sugar per serving!

While making the homemade cinnamon tortilla chips is super easy, you can make this recipe even easier by grabbing a bag of pre-made cinnamon pita chips. I love the combination of the cinnamon pita chips with this fresh fruit salsa – it tastes just like a fruit pie! (Only 100x easier to make.)

This recipe lasts for about 3 days after making, but is best enjoyed within 24 hours of preparing.

Kitchen Tools You May Find Helpful

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Sharp kitchen knife
  • Cutting board
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Spatula or spoon <–I like these spatulas because they are one solid piece and don’t have removable heads for bacteria to get trapped underneath. Plus they are heat-resistant and have a lifetime warranty.
  • Two microwave-safe small bowls
  • Pastry brush <– again, I like these for the same reason – they are one solid piece and heat-resistant (great for BBQing)

How to Make Cinnamon Pita Chips

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper, or grease with baking spray.

Use a pizza cutter or kitchen shears to cut the tortilla chips into triangles. (Use your personal preference when it comes to size.)

Note: I baked my tortillas whole and then broke into chip pieces after baking. The results were inconsistent and not great looking so I modified the method for the recipe.

Place the butter in a small microwave-safe bowl and melt in the microwave, about 15 seconds.

Mix together the cinnamon and sugar in a second small bowl.

Place the tortilla chips on the prepared baking tray and space out so they are not overlapping.

Use a pastry brush to apply the butter to the individual tortilla chips.

Sprinkle cinnamon sugar mix over the chips. You can just cover one side, or flip the chips over and coat the other side as well.

Bake 8 minutes, until pita chips are lightly golden. (Start checking at the 5 minute mark.)

How to Make Fruit Salsa

Clean and chop all of the fruit into small, bite-sized pieces. All of the fruit should be similar sizes for best distribution.

(I decided to use the raspberries as my smallest size and cut everything to match them.)

Place the cut fruit in a large bowl and toss with the brown sugar, preserves, and optional mint.

Place in the fridge to let the flavors marinate.

Serve the fruit salsa with the cinnamon chips.
