Crockpot Mulled Apple Cider Recipe

Apple cider is one of those things that we always have in the house – especially during the fall!

While my daughter is happy to just pour herself a cold glass straight from the fridge, sometimes you want something a little bit special.

This crockpot apple cider recipe takes literally 5 minutes to prepare and while it’s heating up, you can head outside to jump in the leaves with the kids, do some fall baking or just relax. As it heats up, it will make your home smell amazing – it’s better than any apple-scented candle!

I made this crockpot apple cider before some friends came over for a movie and everyone commented on how delicious it smelled the minute they entered my house.

For grown ups, you can offer some spiked options – rum, amaretto or whiskey would all be perfect additions.

Apple Cider Mulling Spices

If you want to enjoy this apple cider recipe often throughout the season, you may want to make your own mulling spice blend to just grab and add to the crockpot whenever the mood strikes.

Traditional mulling spices are:

  • Ginger
  • Cloves
  • Nutmeg
  • Cinnamon
  • Star Anise

You can also use dried orange peel instead of adding fresh sliced oranges.

These mulling spices can also be used to make homemade mulled wine.

Personally, I’m not a huge fan of star anise – it has a slight liquorice taste that is just not for me, but it definitely looks pretty decorating a glass. Reduce or leave out the star anise, if desired.

Because this is a crockpot recipe, you can prepare it in advance and just set to low or warm as long as you need.

This is the crockpot that I use the most often – it has a thermoshield which not only prevents little fingers from being burned if the kids touch the outside of the crockpot, but it’s also great for bringing along to potlucks. I also like that I can set the cook time on it, so if we end up taking too long playing outside (or running errands) I don’t have to worry about the food burning.

This mulled apple cider recipe can be made in the Instant Pot. Simply pop all of the ingredients in the Instant Pot and set to manual for 20-30 minutes.

Tip: I found the apple cider sweet enough on it’s own, but you can optionally add 1/4 cup brown sugar or honey.
