Chocolate Waffles Recipe
Belgian waffles are one of my favorite brunch items, with their crispy edges and light and fluffy interiors, but making homemade Belgian waffle batter first thing in the morning is not what most of us want to do on the weekends.
Luckily, this quick and easy cake mix waffle recipe lets you enjoy all of the delicious flavors and textures of from-scratch Belgian waffles in a fraction of the time and with only 4 ingredients!
We’ve made this recipe with golden cake mix for a traditional-style Belgian waffle, but today’s version is definitely a family favorite: Chocolate Cake Mix Waffles!
My best recommendation when making these cake mix waffles is to use a Belgian waffle maker. This is the brand I use and I also have this amazing Mickey Waffle maker that also makes crispy, Belgian-stlye waffles.
You can use other types of waffle makers, just note that unless it’s a Belgian waffle maker, it may make softer waffles without that crispy exterior that makes this recipe such a hit with my family.
Top your chocolate cake mix waffles with maple syrup, powdered sugar, jam or a berry sauce, caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, cream cheese syrup, whipped cream or even a scoop of ice cream if enjoying these as a dessert
Also, an awesome thing about this “recipe” is that you can use half of the batter to make cake mix waffles and the other half to make cake mix pancakes.

Cake Mix Waffle Variations:
- Pour the waffle mixture into shapes on the waffle iron (or use cookie cutters to cut into shapes)
- Use a waffle iron with a unique design (like our Mickey Waffle maker)
- Add chocolate chips or sprinkles to the batter
- Make these in a variety of flavors by swapping out the cake mix flavor:
- Confetti Cake Mix Waffles
- Red Velvet Cake Waffles – would be amazing topped with cream cheese syrup!
- Carrot Cake Waffles
- Lemon Waffles – top with a variety of berry sauces or jams
- Strawberry Waffles
- Make into ice cream sandwiches by adding a scoop of ice cream in between two cake mix waffles
How to store leftover cake mix waffles: Leftover waffles can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days or frozen for up to 2 months. (This set of freezer containers is a crazy bargain.)
