Heirloom Tomato Salad Recipe

I grew up thinking that salads came in two forms: boring “garden salads” comprised of shredded carrots, torn lettuce and a gross bottled dressing, and Caesar salads with just romaine, croutons and bottled Caesar dressing.

No wonder I hated salads for years!!! I honestly think that the reason most kids hate veggies and salads is because they only ever experience veggies that are boiled to an inch of their live or salads that lack actual flavor and texture.

Well, today’s Heirloom Tomato Salad shows just how far I’ve come in my appreciation of all-things salad. While it isn’t the most kid-friendly veggie recipe on my site, it’s definitely a good one for tomato lovers and a great salad recipe to set out for entertaining. Heirloom tomatoes are not a specific type of tomato, but instead is just a fancy term for natural tomatoes that come in a variety of colours, sizes and shapes.

However, what heirloom tomatoes tend to have in common is that they tend to be juicier and sweeter than most grocery store tomatoes.

  • Add protein with some grilled chicken, fish, shrimp or steak
  • Add creaminess with some chopped avocado
  • Toss in some freshly cooked pasta for a unique tomato and pasta salad
  • Swap out the feta cheese for Parmesan or blue cheese for a different flavor profile
  • Serve on a bed of salad greens for a more filling salad

How to prepare this recipe in advance: I don’t recommend making this salad more than an hour before planning to serve, however you can pre-chop the herbs and combine the olive oil and balsamic to save a bit of time.

How to store heirloom tomato salad: This salad is best served within an hour of preparing, however leftovers can be stored for up to 3 days after making this fresh summer salad.
