Air Fryer Apple Turnover Recipe

All of the flavors of a classic apple pie ready in a fraction of the time!

One of my favorite fall traditions is taking my daycare kids to a local apple orchard and then spending the next couple of weeks baking lots of treats using all of those apples we picked (in addition to making a big batch of Crockpot Applesauce.)

This is our second year whipping up a batch of these air fryer apple hand pies. I often double or triple the recipe, but as written it makes about 6-8 hand pies, depending on the size of your cookie cutter.

Why you’ll love this recipe: The air fryer helps make these classic apple hand pies faster and crispier. The buttery, flaky crust gives way to a warmly spiced apple filling with a light, brown sugar syrup that adds a touch of indulgence without being too messy.

Whether you find yourself with an abundance of apples (like I do every fall) or just want a sweet fall treat, this recipe is perfect for preparing on your own or with your little sous chef(s).

Apple Turnover Variations:

  • Add a spoonful of cream cheese to the apple filling for a tangy, cheesecake-style twist.
  • Brush the tops with an egg wash and sprinkle coarse sugar for extra crunch.
  • Swap apples for pears and add cardamom for a floral, autumnal note.
  • Drizzle cooled hand pies with a thin maple glaze or vanilla icing.
  • Add a teaspoon of caramel sauce to each hand pie before sealing for a caramel apple twist.
  • Use puff pastry instead of homemade crust for a faster, flakier version.

Air Fryer Apple Hand Pies FAQs

Can I use store-bought pie crust? Yes, pre-made pie dough works beautifully and saves time, especially if making this recipe with kids; just avoid overhandling so it stays tender.

Can I freeze apple hand pies? Yes, but I prefer to freeze the unbaked pies rather than freezing after cooking. To freeze, assemble the pies as directed in the recipe below, then store in an airtight freezer bag or your favorite freezer containers (this set of freezer containers is a crazy bargain) with a square of parchment or wax paper separating each pie to prevent the dough from sticking. Keep frozen for up to 3 months. When ready to enjoy, air fry directly from frozen, adding about 2-3 extra minutes of cooking time.

How do I prevent the filling from leaking out? Seal the edges well with a fork and avoid overfilling; a light egg wash can help create a tight seal, if desired.

Can I bake these apple hand pies instead of air frying? Yes, they’ll come out slightly less crisp than in the air fryer but still buttery and flaky, especially if you chill the assembled pies for 10-15 minutes before baking.

If baking instead of air-frying, you may need to increase the baking time to 12-14 minutes.
