Hot chocolate is one of my favourite winter indulgences. As much as we love a good cup of tea in our house, there is nothing quite like coming inside from a snowy exploration and having a warm cup of hot chocolate waiting for you.

On one particularly dreary day this week, the kids and I set to work in the kids’ kitchen and created this healthy hot chocolate recipe.

Healthy hot chocolate recipe with only 4 ingredients and a kids' kitchen recipe printable. This winter recipe is sugar-free and made with whole food ingredients.

I had the kids mix up all of the ingredients for this healthy hot chocolate recipe at their kitchen table, but this is also a great first option for a child who is ready to cook on the stove as all that is required is pouring and whisking!

Making sugar-free hot chocolate in the kids' kitchen

I had each of the children take turns adding in one ingredient and giving the mixture a whisk before I placed it on the stove.

Ingredients

  • 2 Tablespoon butter, optional
  • 20 pierogis, thawed or fresh
  • 1 1/2 cups sour cream
  • 1 cup cheese
  • 1 lb kielbasa or polish sausage
  • 2 green onions, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F
  2. If you want to brown the pierogis first, place the butter in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the pierogis to the melted butter and brown, approximately 3 minutes on each side.
  3. Place the pierogis in a large bowl.
  4. Mix in the sour cream, sausage, 1 chopped green onion and 1/2 cup of cheese.
  5. Pour the pierogi mixture into a 9x9 casserole dish and top with remaining cheese.
  6. Bake for 22 minutes until the cheese is completely melted.
  7. Top with remaining green onions and serve.

Don’t worry if your honey doesn’t seem runny enough, the heat will help break it down and make it less clumpy.

(If you would prefer to substitute out the honey, coconut sugar would be delicious!)

This sugar-free, healthy hot chocolate recipe can be spiced up with a pinch of cayenne pepper and cinnamon, or given a fruity vibe by infusing with slices of orange or orange zest. Or if you’d like a peppermint hot chocolate, throw in a peppermint tea bag or two drops of food-quality peppermint extract. (I like to add a small pinch of good-quality sea salt to my cup.)
