Chocolate Peppermint Popcorn Recipe

I don’t know why I bother buying any snack foods for our house.

The only treats we ever end up eating are the copious amount of desserts I turn out of the kitchen… and popcorn.

It’s my-go treat for pretty much any family night.

Board game night? Popcorn.

Movie night? Popcorn.

Hanging out, reading books and watching my daughter practice gymnastics on the living room furniture? Popcorn.

And while I love making air-popped popcorn with a bit of melted butter, olive oil and flaked sea salt, sometimes it’s nice to mix it up and try something a little bit different.

This Chocolate Peppermint Popcorn is a fun treat during the holidays, incorporating melted chocolate, white chocolate peppermint and crushed candy canes for a decadent chocolate popcorn with a refreshing peppermint flavor. Using the milk chocolate to balance out the two peppermint ingredients helps ensure that this dessert stays decadent and doesn’t end up overpowering or toothpaste-like.

While I used air-popped popcorn for this recipe, feel free to use your favorite popcorn flavor (buttery, salty or kettle corn) as a base and then just layer on the chocolates and peppermint.

If you don’t have an air-popper and don’t want to use microwave popcorn packets, you can pop your popcorn on the stove or in a brown paper bag in the microwave

More Variations on this Peppermint Popcorn Recipe:

  • add chopped pretzels for a salty touch
  • add salted or candied nuts (like our candied pecans)
  • add crushed Peppermint OREOs
  • add festive holiday sprinkles
  • if you can’t find white chocolate peppermint squares or bars, feel free to use Peppermint Kisses or even a mint-flavored chocolate like Andes to achieve a similar flavor profile

Storage: This chocolate peppermint popcorn will keep at room temperature for 3-4 days if stored in an airtight container or ziptop bag. If you plan on gifting some of your popcorn, opt for pretty containers or ziptop bags rather than those cute bags with twist ties to ensure that the popcorn stays fresh.

How to Make Peppermint Bark Popcorn

Pop the popcorn using your preferred method.

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

Spread the popcorn in an even layer on the cookie sheet.

Melt the milk chocolate chips in 25 second bursts in the microwave, stirring between each reheating until completely melted.

Drizzle the melted chocolate on the popcorn.

Repeat the melting and drizzling process with the peppermint chips (I like to drizzle in the opposite direction of the milk chocolate drizzle to ensure even coverage).

Sprinkle on the broken peppermint candies while the chocolate is still wet. (To crush the peppermint candies, place them in a ziptop bag, then wrap in a clean kitchen towel and whack with a rolling pin or kitchen mallet. The kitchen towel will help protect your counters.)

Let the chocolate drizzle set/dry for up to 1 hour before serving or packaging.

Makes 6 cups.
