I love buying funny gifts for my brothers that actually get some use – like the Fred kitchen appliances that are kitschy but useful, the One Direction sticker booklet I bought Liam (which was re-gifted to an actual One Direction fan), or the Justin Bieber singing microphone I gave Eric which still gets brought out on karaoke nights. What’s the point in having brothers if you can’t give them a hard time every once in awhile?

I also like to remind them what total turkeys they were growing up – distracting me while eating so one of them could eat all my french fries, writing on my wall in glow-in-the-dark paint after a scary movie, or taking all of my gum out of my purse and then putting the empty pack back in it’s place.

When I saw the new Extra® 35-stick pack at Walgreens, I knew that I had to turn it into a joke gift somehow. If they had these when I was growing up, I may have actually gotten a piece of my own gum every once in a while!

I grabbed one of each the Extra® Gum Spearmint (for Eric) and Extra® Gum Polar Ice® (for Liam) at the check-out counter and skipped the card aisle to make my own at home.

I created this simple purse template which you can download for your own use here. This printable purse template would be great for gift cards, or other small items.

How to Make a Paper Purse

Print off the tempalte and also grab:

• Glue
• Buttons
• Scrapbook paper
• Pencil
• Scissors

Print and trace the paper purse template onto the scrapbook paper. (You’ll notice that I made the lines on the template thick as it’s meant to be a “main template” traced onto patterned paper.)

Unless you have double-sided scrapbook paper, the handle will be blank. Feel free to decorate this or trace a second handle and glue it overtop of the blank handle.

Simply trace and cut out the purse outline and then fold the bottom halfway up, touching the bottom of the inner half-circle of the handle. Fold down that half-circle to form the purse’s flap.

Glue your button or chosen embellishments and then glue (or tape) in your gift card or small gift. Write a small message to your recipient – maybe something along the lines of, “Since you always raided mine, here’s your very own purse with enough gum to share!”

I wasn’t expecting the Extra® 35-stick pack to be so durable, but that worked out really well as we were able to transform the case into it’s own purse! (And I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was also made out of recycled packaging.)

To turn the Extra® 35-stick pack into a purse, string some beads or embellishments onto a pipe cleaner and then glue the ends of the pipe cleaner to the sides of the pack. Add a small button to the flap and you’re done!
