A super easy Halloween mason jar craft, these Muddy Magic Potion Mason Jars look like they’ve just tumbled out of a witch’s dusty lair and make a great addition to your Halloween home decor.
Halloween Mason Jar Craft
Once upon a time, there was a mom who was obsessed with canning.
She canned everything and anything that the Basics Basics Jams, Preserves and Chutneys Handbook by Marguerite Patten suggested she try.
She bought boxes and boxes of mason jars for canning… until one day she just stopped.
And was stuck with about a kajillion mason jars.
So now this mom needs to come up with new uses for her obscenely large collection of mason jars.

These jars were super simple to make and ended up being a great addition to our Halloween party decor. I used them to hold utensils and straws, but they could be used for flowers, or catch-alls, or even holding battery-operated candles for a spooky party effect.
I already had all of the materials on hand that I needed to make these muddy-looking mason jars. They could be done in any color scheme, so if you don’t already have gold spray paint on hand, use two same-color, different-hued paints that you do have. While spray paint is easier, it is not necessary for this craft to turn out great!
Materials for Halloween Mason Jars
- 3+ Mason Jars
- Marker
- Hot glue
- Gold spray paint
- 2 shades brown paint
- Sponge applicator
- Paper towel
- Flameless candles (1 for every mason jar)
Tip: swap out the gold and brown paints for black and grey, white and beige, red and brick red, etc, – whatever you have on hand.
How to Make Halloween Mason Jars
Outline the design of your witch jars in marker on the mason jars.
Using hot glue, trace your designs to create a 3D effect.
Once the hot glue has dried, spray the mason jars thoroughly with gold spray paint. Plan to apply a second coat, if needed – giving yourself overnight to let them dry.
Using a sponge applicator, splotch on the brown paints, alternating colours to create a muddy, imperfect look. Allow some of the original gold to shine through.
Allow to dry before attaching to any pedestals – I used a pillar candlestick holder to give some height to one of my jars, creating more visual interest.
Add a flameless candle to each jar and decorate as you please.

Instructions
- Outline the design of your witch jars in marker on the mason jars.
