Valentine’s Chalkboard Craft

We’ve been renovating our home for going on 4 years now and it is coming along so beautifully.

I love decorating, but with most of our budget going to the renovations, I have to get creative with how we decorate – especially for holidays when the decorations only make an appearance for a few weeks at most.

Making our own DIY Valentine’s Day decorations is definitely a saving grace. It’s so easy to find heart-shaped supplies that we can customize to suit our space and style.

This easy pom pom chalkboard was a recent project. Using a Dollar Tree heart-shaped chalkboard and some yarn I already had lying around, I created a shabby chic piece of wall art that I can change up every day with different sayings or thoughtful notes.

I think it would be really cute to put this chalkboard on your child’s bedroom door (or your partner’s closet door) and change out the little notes every day leading up to Valentine’s – or a special birthday or anniversary.

You can use DIY pom poms or pre-made pom poms to customize your chalkboard.

There are lots of different ways to make DIY pom poms – using a pom pom maker like we did or using a variety of different household materials. I linked a few Youtube tutorials below showing different methods:

The first time you make a pom pom, it will probably be frustrating and seem difficult, but trust me – it gets super easy with every pom pom you make, and soon you’ll be adding homemade pom poms to just about every DIY you undertake.

Check out my quick video on how I made my pom pom chalkboard, including how to make homemade yarn pom poms. (The video is kind of low quality – sorry about that, it was one of the first I ever filmed!) And then don’t forget to scroll down to grab your free printable instructions:

Tip: you can also use pre-made pom poms to make your pom pom chalkboard.

How to Make a Pom Pom Chalkboard

Follow the directions on your pom pom marker to make large pom poms.

For our fork-shaped pom pom maker, I wound the large about 30 times around the largest fork.

Thread a length of yarn through the middle of the yarn circle and secure with a single knot.

Pull the yarn off of the pom pom maker and firmly pull the length of yarn you just tied into a double knot. The rest of the yarn should form a circular shape with the tension, as shown.

Use a sharp pair of craft scissors to cut through the yarn loops, forming a shaggy pom pom, then trim the pom pom to look fluffy and even, as shown.

Repeat this process, making as many pom poms as needed to cover the outside of the chalkboard.

I also made a two-tone pom pom for the center of the top by looping about 15 loops of white yarn, then 15 loops of pink yarn, onto the pom pom maker, then repeating the same steps to finish off the pom pom.

Arrange the pom poms in your desired pattern around the chalkboard – I used an alternating color pattern of pink and white.

Secure the pom poms to the chalkboard using hot glue.

Allow the glue to dry before hanging your chalkboard.
