Best French Onion Dip Recipe

I already have a tried-and-true recipe for homemade french onion soup mix that makes a easy, healthy onion dip – but I wanted to make a version that included real caramelized onions and a bit more depth of flavor.

Today’s recipe is a decadent French onion dip for the discerning gourmand in your life. The caramelized onions add a luscious sweetness and acidity to this creamy, flavorful dip – perfect for everything from a humble chip to health-conscious crudites (raw veggie sticks).

And unlike most pre-made French Onion Dips that you can buy from the grocery store, the flavor of this homemade French Onion Dip just gets better the longer that it sits in the fridge.

How long does French onion dip last? Our caramelized French onion dip tastes best when enjoyed within 3-4 days of preparing, but it is still delicious up to a week after making. After this point, the onion flavor will intensify and the sour cream may become watery – but you can pour out the extra liquid and still enjoy.

Is French onion dip gluten-free? While I can’t speak for other recipes, our version of homemade French onion dip is gluten-free.

  • Measuring Cups and Spoons
  • Cast Iron Skillet <– I love the versatility of a good cast-iron pan – you can make everything from eggs to dessert in them and they transition easily from the stove to the oven. This one is pre-seasoned and great for even heating
  • Sharp Kitchen Knife
  • Cutting Board
  • Wooden Spoon or Spatula <– I like these spatulas because they are one solid piece and don’t have removable heads for bacteria to get trapped underneath. Plus they are heat-resistant and have a lifetime warranty.

Once the butter is melted, add the onions and stir occasionally as onions wilt.

Add the beef broth a few tablespoons at a time to prevent the onions from burning. Stir the onions occasionally and add more beef broth as the broth gets absorbed by the onions. This process will take about 25-35 minutes.

Once the onions are well-golden and all beef broth has been used and absorbed, remove the onions from the heat and stir in the Worcestershire sauce. Allow to cool completely before proceeding with the recipe.
