Edible Cake Slime Recipe
My daycare kids go crazy when I make slime so I’ve tried to start making only edible slime with them so that even our youngest kids can get in on the sensory play. (We’re Canadian so the youngest is over 1 year old. I had to clear that up on my edible honey slime post…) It’s not about making edible slimes as a “snack” – it’s about providing a safe alternative to a glue-based slime for a variety of ages and developmental stages.
Recently, we had a daycare kid celebrating a birthday and he is by far the biggest slime fan in the group, so I thought instead of making cupcakes to celebrate, I would make an edible birthday cake slime! I knew that he’d love it more than actual birthday cake – and ironically, I find my kids don’t really eat a ton of the edible slimes, they just take a couple curious nibbles and continue playing, so this actually would result in less sugar intake than if I had made cupcakes!
So, the night before his birthday, Ella and I set about to experimenting for the perfect “birthday slime.”
We wanted it to have a vanilla taste and lots of birthday sprinkles. I couldn’t think of any candy with a vanilla taste (we’ve done Gummy Bear Slime and Edible Starburst Candy Slime) but we always add a lot of vanilla to our homemade marshmallow fondant recipe which was the inspiration behind our Peeps Airdry Clay, so I figured it was worth trying to make a marshmallow slime!
This slime is stickier than our other edible slimes… it is made with marshmallows after all! To counter the slime sticking to our hands, we just rubbed a little bit of oil on them and it worked perfectly. (You can see in the video that it wasn’t sticking everywhere.)
This cake slime is great for squishing and stretching, but it’s a bit “tougher” than a regular glue-based slime. It doesn’t drip or rip apart easily, which also has the bonus of not being messy.
And of course, the taste!
This birthday cake slime has a pleasant vanilla taste but you could use whichever flavor extracts you have on hand or you could also use flavored marshmallows to make a different “cake” flavor. Chocolate marshmallows, strawberry marshmallows – I’ve even seen maple marshmallows in the summer. (Super yummy on s’mores, too!)
This is an edible slime recipe to just have fun with – let the kids grab toys from the play kitchen and empty out the last of your holiday sprinkles. My daughter and my daycare kids had a blast playing with this and that’s way more important than worrying about them using up all the rainbow sprinkles!

How to Make Edible Cake Slime
Place your marshmallows in a heatproof bowl and microwave in 25-second bursts to melt fully. Stir in between reheatings. (It took two rounds of 25-second heatings for ours to melt.)
Stir in 1 Tablespoon oil and your vanilla extract. Taste and adjust, as desired.
Stir and then knead the powdered icing sugar into the slime, 1/4 cup or so at a time. You may need less icing sugar than we used, so it’s better to start with less and work your way up.
Add up to 2 Tablespoons of oil to help the slime regain it’s stretch as you add more icing sugar.
Add your sprinkles, knead in, and then add more.
Have some oil to the side if you decide you want to oil your hands a bit to eliminate any stickiness.
