DIY S’mores Play Set
A fun DIY play set for kids, today’s DIY S’mores Play Set features a cardboard tube and tissue paper bonfire complete with play food s’mores so kids can have all of the fun of a bonfire without having to stay up late or set up a fire each night.
DIY S’mores Bonfire Craft
Anyone else have kids that are obsessed with making s’mores but have zero interest in actually eating them?
Or kids who beg to make bonfires in the middle of the day when it is WAY TOO HOT to even be outside, let alone be outside gathered around a campfire?
Well, I definitely do. It’s over 100F right now and my kids seem to think that’s a reasonable temperature to ask me to go out and make s’mores (at 10AM in the morning) so I decided we were going to get creative and make our own bonfire and play s’mores… while hanging out in the air-conditioning.
I mean, if we’re going to make a play kitchen to bake cookies, we might as well make a play bonfire to make s’mores, right?
Today’s bonfire features a mix of tissue papers and scarves for the fire, and some pinecones and scribbled-on cardboard tubes for the logs.
For the s’mores, we used cardboard squares for the graham crackers, squares of brown felt for the melted chocolate and flattened cotton rounds for the marshmallows.
The kids were in absolute bliss making their s’mores and sitting around their campfire. I even put fire crackling sounds on the TV for ambiance.
Ella and I have a running joke based on “Bee Movie” when we swat away fake mosquitos where we go “Mosquito – SMACK – SMACK” and hit away pretend mosquitos. For your family, reenact whatever bonfire fun will make this activity feel real and fun for your kids.
Materials for DIY S’mores Kits
- Cardboard Tubes
- Cardboard
- Tissue Paper or Scarves <– use fire colors
- Brown Craft Felt
- Cotton Balls or Large White Pom Poms
- Sticks and Other Natural Materials
- Markers
- Scissors <– these are the ones we have in our daycare, super easy to use and actually cut through things (unlike a lot of safety scissors). They’ve lasted for over 5 years
How to Make a DIY S’mores and Bonfire Set
Cut out squares of cardboard and brown felt in equal sizes.
Have the kids assemble their smores and smoosh the cotton balls to work as marshmallows. Set aside.
Draw log or wooden patterns on the cardboard rolls.
Set the rolls on the floor and drape the scarves or tissue paper over top to suggest that you are “lighting the fire.”
Have the kids roast their s’mores over the fire.
If your family has special traditions around the campfire, reenact them now. We pretended to bat away mosquitos and tell a “spooky story” (which wasn’t all that spooky).
Ask the kids to describe how the fire feels or the taste of their s’mores.
If you want to go the extra mile, you can make a s’mores inspired treat or bake s’mores in the oven or air-fryer to enjoy during this activity. But don’t feel obliged, the kids will enjoy the make-believe s’mores more than you would expect.
